Be it sleeping under the northern lights, cosy up in a traditional Kyrgyz village, or staying in a rain forest treehouse, the possibilities for unique and unusual experiences are endless.

The Golden Crown Hotel has up to 18 glass igloos with adjustable headrests on the beds for enhanced northern lights – the aurora borealis – viewing. The windows are insulated and heated up to keep from frosting. Guests can choose from Suite Igloos (with an outdoor jacuzzi and private terrace) to Prime Superior Igools, which has stunning views of the valley, or even the Superior Igloo.

Kokopelli’s Cave is a hotel built inside a 60 million-year-old Ojo Alamo sandstone cliff with amazing views of the La Plata River. The hotel is a bed-and-breakfast multiroom unique experience, filled with a jacuzzi and waterfall shower, a full kitchen, a living room with fireplace and bedrooms with balcony views of the vast desert landscape below.

The Book and Bed Hotel is the perfect staycation for bibliophiles; the hotel resembles a bookstore until guests slide open a bookshelf to reveal a cosy reading nook with a bed, reading light and electrical outlet. The hotel in Tokyo offers 30 individual rooms with shared bathrooms and a communal reading area.

Dromen Ann Zee – Dreaming by the Sea – offers three unusual and unique stays: a lighthouse, a lifeboat and a harbour crane. The Havenkraan (harbour crane) gives panoramic views of the WaddenSea, with bright colours, kitchen area, bathroom and rooftop patio.

The Vuurtoren (lighthouse) was built in 1920 and now has three rooms with 360º degrees views of the sea and the city. The Reddingsboot (lifeboat) was turned into a modern room that can be taken out on a two-hour cruise.

5.Unique and Unusual Experiences – Hotel Costa Verde, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Hotel Costa Verde turned a Boeing 727 into a two-bedroom luxury guesthouse with jungle and ocean views and patios extend over the wings. Guests can choose to have dinner in the kitchenette or enjoy local fare and drinks at El Avión, Hotel Costa Verde’s restaurant and pub housed in a C-123 Fairchild cargo plane that played a part in the Iran-Contra Affair of the 1980s.

The Jumbo Stay is the ideal hotel for aviation enthusiasts – the hotel is a former jet model plane from 1976 that was originally built for Singapore Airlines. It underwent a renovation to bring a new and modern interior decor, offering guests a memorable overnight experience – which can even be had in the cockpit.

The Giraffe Manor boutique hotel is located in one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings. The building has a stately façade, elegant interior, verdant green gardens and delightful courtyards, and yet the most fascinating thing about this unusual hotel is the herd of resident giraffes who visit in the morning and the evening, poking through the windows in the hope of a treat before going to their forest sanctuary.

The Treehouse Lodge Resort is located in the Amazon Rainforest of Peru and has twelve tree houses for guests to choose from. Each treehouse has railing curtains, a mosquito net, a bathroom with a cold-water shower and suspended walkways leading each house to the central commons treehouse, where Peruvian-inspired meals are served.

The Sun Cruise Resort & Spa is located on a coastal cliff in Jeongdongjin and is one of the countries biggest tourist destinations. Sun Cruise Resort features 211 rooms, both condominium and hotel style, a Western and a Korean restaurant, a revolving sky lounge, a night club, a karaoke, and a seawater pool.

The Conrad Rangali Island is the first hotel to have an underwater stay – the Muraka, an underwater villa filled with technology and modern design that delivers a truly transformative experience that amazes anyone. Located 5 meters – 16 feet – below sea level in the middle of the Indian Ocean with glass walls, the Muraka is a two-level aquarium where guests fall asleep to fish swimming overhead and wake up to the swaying arms of coral.

Palacio de Sal, Bolivia

Palacio de Sal in Bolivia used the famous salt of the Salar de Uyuni to create itself as a luxury hotel in the middle of the Bolivian Desert. Everything in the hotel is made of salt, which includes the building and the furniture. The Palacio de Sal has thirty rooms with wooden flooring and a private tiled bath. Bed platforms and armchairs in the common area are made of salt, but plush blankets and pillows make for a comfortable stay. The dining room’s windows frame a panoramic view of the salt flats, and meals include locally sourced llama and lamb and the house speciality, salt chicken.

Icehotel, Sweeden

The Icehotel was founded in 1989 and is the world’s first hotel made of ice and snow. The hotel has 150 warm and cold rooms with the cold rooms having ice decor and a bad made of ice covered with reindeer hides and guests sleep in a thermal sleeping bag. The Icehotel also includes an ice church, ice bar, ice sculpting studio and pillar hall, in addition to two heated restaurants, lounge, four meeting rooms and two wilderness camps.
