Hotel Ritz, Madrid

The Ritz has undergone extensive renovations but has managed to hang onto a lot of its original hotel design so expect classic luxury at every turn. Sumptuous carpets made down the road at the Royal Tapestry Factory ensure that every step you take is in cushioned comfort.

Gran Mélia Palacio de los Duques

Although the building has been comprehensively revamped, original features remain. There is a Velázquez theme throughout the hotel with large reproductions of the great master’s paintings and the color scheme is inspired by the tones of his palette, with shimmery fabrics in hues of ochre, indigo, and maroon.

Westin Palace

This is one of those hotels where you step through the door and enter a different world. La Rotonda, as the restaurant and lounge area under an ornate stained-glass dome is called, is a circle of elegance where locals and guests meet for coffee and drinks at all times of the day. There are a good gym and sauna, but no pool.

Only You Hotel Atocha

A massive 19th-century building on a landmark corner site has been given an industrial-style makeover, with exposed pipes, black and white stripes, boxing posters and artworks with a sporting theme. Gentle jazz adds to the New York vibe. Stenciled lettering and a red stripe running along the walls in the corridors lends a bit of multi-storey car park chic.

NH Collection Madrid Suécia

The Suecia opened in the 1950s and for decades the hotel was a meeting place for Swedish residents in Madrid. Star designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán has cleverly remodeled the ground and mezzanine floors, where Art Deco details mix smoothly with contemporary Scandinavian style in the stylish restaurant and café. Definitely, a place to slither off a bar stool after one too many Daquiris.

Urso Hotel & Spa

The Urso opened at the end of August 2014 in an early 20th-century palatial building. Although it is in the center of Madrid, a muted palette of cool green, gray and cream tones and delicate Japanese prints create an air of calm and discreet chicness. Black and white photographs throughout the hotel give a fascinating insight into how the city has changed over the last century.

Hotel Urban Madrid

The first thing you will notice about this unusual hotel is its form — a glass-encased tower studded with black Zimbabwe stone, and seamed with champagne-coloured steel beams. Make sure you try out the wave-shaped flap chair by Edra that reclines at six different angles.

Tótem Madrid Hotel

You step into a world of minimalist luxury where all the materials are high quality. Charcoal, teal, dusky pink, cerise, navy, and purple all play a part in the color scheme, popping out against a palette of shimmery neutrals. The original wooden staircase has been restored and lends a sense of grandeur.

ME Madrid Reina Victoria

The glamor of the Reina Victoria’s former life has filtered through to the present day but now it is all Skandi-chic with Eames-style chairs inside.

Vincci The Mint Hotel

Designed by the renowned Jaime Beriestain, Vincci The Mint occupies an elegant, early 20th-century building and lives up to its name with cool green shades throughout, from peppermint to pistachio, pear, lime, olive, and emerald.

Double Tree by Hilton Madrid Prado

In an elegant traditional building with a white frontage, the Madrid Prado is every inch a boutique property and a very welcome addition to the city’s luxe hotel scene. It’s an excellent choice for those attending Madrid’s gastronomic, fashion and art events.

Hotel Barceló Torre de Madrid

Top Spanish designer Jaime Hayón has created fresh, sensual interiors using a palette of jewel and berry shades with gold details and sweeping curves. A sculpture of a giant zebra-striped bear doffing a top hat dominates the ground-floor lobby and cartoon-like masks decorate the walls in the corridors, along with flamenco-themed artworks.

Hotel Unico Madrid

The Único is nothing if not dramatic. The property was originally a grand residence and it still has a discreet, private feel.

Gran Meliá Fénix Hotel

The hotel’s interior highlight is undoubtedly the lobby. Take a seat in one of the red velvet banquettes, and drink in the scene: a vast, circular room supported by Ionic columns made from yellowed, fibrous marble, and a palace staircase at one end. The room is crowned with a modernist stained-glass dome fizzing with color and decorated with impressions of noble ladies with sausage curls.

There are terrific restaurants and a buzzy lobby where guests look up in wonder at the vaulted ceiling, which is actually a 300m LED screen that projects 3D images, videos, photos and all sorts of wizardry.

The new Ruby Lilly at Stiglmaierplatz offers a lot to the eye of the beholder.  In the black, gold-accented lobby, hand-picked vintage furniture and colorful armchairs, various wooden chairs, as well as small and large tables create a casual and elegant mix around the bar under a high, open ceiling. An electric guitar animated on the wall animate and make music.

Michael Struck, founder and CEO of the Ruby Hotels, which currently has two houses in Vienna, is focused on a clientele that “moves in modern and postmodern living environments and is looking for the extraordinary”. His concept is “Lean Luxury” and stands for luxury, which is not defined by marble bathrooms, but wants to combine the essence with the experience.

For the bedrooms “Lean Luxury” means oak, precious cherry wood wall paneling, comfortable beds, partial window-sills with cashmere and chic lamps. An eye-catcher is the television test-image of the 1980s, which always appears in the carpet in the hotel rooms.

The Ruby Lilly Hotel Munich is located in a former eight-storey building, so that the restructuring of the guest rooms has resulted in 20 different ground plans. In order to be as efficient as possible, a glazed shower and a washing table were integrated into the rooms, so the guest can theoretically watch the shower. In the distance he can see from his retreat as well: Bodentiefe window fronts offer a view far over the Löwenbräukeller and the roofs of the city. In the summer, a mobile bar is planned on the roof terrace.
