In a city completely destroyed by the World War II, there is The Suite Hotel Pincoffs, located right in the very heart of Rotterdam Harbour. What used to be the customs house from the border – a space that had been mostly empty since the early 1990s – is now a wonderful place to stay in the city.
Why Pincoffs?
Lodewijk Pincoffs was a very known businessman that, after the war, challenged the government and himself to rebuild this so important part of the city – where once was placed the harbour, the warehouse, the city safe, among others.
The government trusted Pincoffs to this mission that he grabbed with his soul. He earned a lot of money, from many entities and wealthy families that he used to rebuild some facilities and to start some projects. He is the responsible in establishing Rotterdam as the world’s largest port, an honour it held until 2002.
However, after war there’s always a crisis that also stroked Pincoffs first business. To not loose it, the well-known entrepreneur and hero of Rotterdam, used the given money to rescue his own business.

The police tried to arrest Pincoffs but he travelled from city to city until arrived to the United States of America, where the police couldn’t capture him.
Because of this episode a lot of people suffered and saw their affairs went bankrupt. Pincoffswashero and villain at the same time and has a very special role in Rotterdam’s history.
Near his statue in the city we can read “a spectacle of so much glory and so much shame”.

About the building
For many years, this very important building was neglected and Rotterdam’s government felt a lot of pain because of it and they wanted to do something about it.
At the same time there was a couple, Karen & Edwin, both journalists for many years and full of experience from travelling and journeys on the better hotels of the world, wanted to have their own project. They dreamed about an ideal place where guests could not just feel well welcomed, but at home as well. They saw this opportunity on this old building.

At first sight they though it was a crazy idea and then they started to feel it like an opportunity to carry forward their dream – “we though to do it when retired but to build our dream hotel takes long time and energy” says Karen between proudly smiles.
So, with no hotel experience at all, they begin to create an hotel with the same facilities and comfort from the other famous ones, however more personal and enthusiastic to guests.

It was such an important moment to Rotterdam and such an opportunity to advertise the city that RTL, the Dutch national TV channel, followed Karen & Edwin for the all renovation and restoration process that took eleven months to be completed.
The hotel opened its doors at March 2008 and a lot of people came because they’ve followed it on TV.
About Suite Hotel Pincoffs

When projecting it, the couple left the elements that give character to the place and that tells the story of it. The hotel is a mix of design and antique in order to create atmosphere and experience, with many unique pieces made from elements of the old building, for instance, all the cabinets are made from the old doors of the offices, that are now transformed in spacious, bright and comfortable bedrooms, all different one from another, decorated with different colours and details in each.

As the couple wanted this hotel to be special and familiar, all the art pieces spread on the room are from many artist and friends. It is a way to celebrate design with friends too.
Tripadvisor’s number 1 hotel in Rotterdam, the Pincoffs is a boutique hotel full of personal touches and friendly staff, which not use uniform so they can relate better with guests, that the team prefer to see more like friends. In the lobby of the hotel you won’t see a desk and a proper concierge but a big table where you can sit with the smiley person that afterwards will show you all the common rooms and follow you to your bedroom. You can also choose a book or a DVD from the collection, so you can really feel at home and enjoy a relaxing evening.

By the morning there will be a fantastic breakfast at the living room, where Philippe Starck chairs gives it a very fresh, clean and calm ambiance to well begin the day. Karen and Edwin are also very proud to be Green Key award winners, recognition of their commitment to being a sustainable hotel from serving only local organic meats at breakfast to planting new trees in Panama or to deal with fair trade.
With a spectacular both actual and “availed” design, the small luxury hotel Pincoffs is happy to receive you, so you can discover all this stories by the owners that will be very proud to tell you about it.
After seven years of welcoming guests to Pincoffs, we can see by Karen’s look that the couple is still leaving their dream.

Kiev-based designer Pavel Vetrov has conceived the interior scheme of a hotel room, which sees a clear division between white space and color. the two opposing styles are split down the middle in a definitively straight line, breaking the space into two distinct compositions.
Facing the bed, the back wall is separated in two — one surface reveals a vibrant, artistic arrangement of colors, graphics, graffiti and collage; the other is completely white, with colorless furnishings and textiles.
The bed sheets share the same properties, with a pink and peach design canvassing the duvet cover up to its middle point. this half of the bed sits atop a patterned rug made up of illustrations, and comic figures, leading to a colored wall and window frame with a spray-painted effect.

It seems like just yesterday we were playing Guess the Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, but fast-forward five years and we’re back—and we’re talking yet another renovation. The ship-shaped hotel formerly known as The Yankee Clipper has been doing its things in Fort Lauderdale for years and years, and after a stint as a Sheraton it has been turned over and turned into the B Ocean Resort.

Upgrades and improvements are scheduled to wrap up early next year, so all those spring breakers will be able to check things out during their ins and outs of sobriety. The Sun Sentinel has all the details, but it sounds like new colors and fun furnishings are just part of the plans.
Bathrooms will be getting an upgrade as well, as all finishes will get a remake in a palette of blues and grays to go along with the overall feeling of being right next to the Atlantic. New artwork will be featured in the rooms as well, and it looks like they’re going with a sea turtle motif—um, ok!

Other goodies include a nip and tuck for the pool and its surroundings, there will be a new to-go section added to the on-site restaurant, and the Wreck Bar will undergo a refresh as well. The hotel is only one of a few right on the beach in Fort Lauderdale, and they will be sure to show that off with a renovated lobby featuring big, expansive windows and a grand staircase. You’ll know you’re at the beach as soon as you check-in.
The global expansion of the Soho House Group continues apace with the opening of its new Istanbul outpost. However, if anyone thought the brand, founded by Nick Jones in 1995, might be in danger of over-stretching itself and diluting its potent USP – “a comfortable home for a community of like-minded creative people wherever they are” – need only glance inside the latest House and think again.
It’s the group’s 13th house and the largest club to date, with a variety of public spaces and 87 bedrooms spread throughout four buildings: two existing properties and two new builds. Looking at the scale and detailed execution of the Istanbul House refurbishment, it’s clear that Jones, although now a minority stakeholder since US billionaire Ron Burkle and his investment fund Yucaipa bought 60 per cent of Soho House Group (SHG), remains a fastidious hands-on CEO, ensuring that this new property is as unique as the group’s venues in other cities such as Berlin and Chicago.
Four years in the making, Soho House Istanbul lies in the Beyoğlu district of Turkey’s largest city, but enter the 19th-century Corpi Building and you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve wandered into a Venetian palazzo. Palatial proportions (five metres high in places), tick. Carrara marble and decorative parquet flooring, tick. Walls and ceilings complete with frescoes, tick. Built by a Genoese shipbuilder in 1873, who enlisted Italian architect Giacomo Leoni, it was indeed inspired by an Italian palazzo, and originally took nine years to complete. It previously served as the US embassy and consulate before becoming the social hub of the Soho House Istanbul which encompasses private club spaces, a prohibition style speakeasy called The Embassy Club and a rooftop pool.
James Waterworth, design & developement director, said the historical nature of the Corpi building was the main challenge. “There were limits to what we could do with the space. Everything had to work around the original layout; for example, where you can put the kitchen and the bar,” he says. “All of the frescoes and a lot of the carpentry around the Piemonte rosewood doors was in bad condition, and had to be restored by experts. They were as detailed as scientists.” The furniture and many of the textiles were sourced, or made locally, with an eclectic mix of custom-designed furniture by the SHG team and vintage pieces bought from antiques shops.
The Annex Building next door hosts 28 bedrooms. Meanwhile the newly constructed Chancery Building houses the 250-cover Italian restaurant Cecconi’s on the ground floor and on the Chancery’s roof members will find The Mandolin Terrace, which offers “Aegean-inspired dining”. “It overlooks the Golden Horn and the old town,” says Waterworth. “It’s particularly special at dusk when you can gaze at views of the Golden Horn and the old town to the sound of the calls for prayer.”
SHG excavated part of the hillside to create the six-storey Glass Building, home to another 59 bedrooms, second rooftop pool, large Cowshed spa, gym, ballroom and 49-seat screening room. There’s also The Allis, an all-day lounge and bar. Bedrooms range in size from “tiny” (19 sqm) “small” and “small plus” to 17 mezzanines offered in four different sizes (with the trademark SHG in-room freestanding bathtub), plus a Playroom and the expansive 137-sqm Apartment. Rooms are light and airy, with the host city reflected in a smattering of richly patterned tribal ceramics and textiles – such as ikats, suzanis and kilims – or carved wooden headboards.
Best of all, you don’t have to be a member of Soho House to stay there.
At Four Seasons NY you’ll find the highest hotel suite in a city known for its legendary skyscrapers, the opulent, one-of-a-kind Ty Warner Penthouse suite in New York soars 800 feet (244 metres) above the street. Created by visionary architects I. M. Pei and Peter Marino, the suite was seven years and USD 50 million in the making and offers incredible 360-degree views.
From your castle in the clouds, find inspiration in the breathtaking, unobstructed vista of one of the world’s finest cities. Four glass balconies are set on a diagonal to the north-south, east-west grid of Manhattan, capturing distinctive views. Oversized, single-paned windows and glass railings ensure that your sight line is uninterrupted.
