Sharing a city block with the Woolworth Building, Cass Gilbert’s iconic 1913 skyscraper, 30 Park Place combines a 189-key five-star Four Seasons hotel with 157 top-end condominium apartments in a slender 82-story tower that has become an important landmark among the constellation of towers in Manhattan’s Downtown. The hotel entrance on Barclay Street leads visitors into four floors of lobbies, lounges, restaurants, ballrooms, meeting facilities, and a spa and fitness center. The grand stair to the public rooms of the hotel faces a through-block garden framed by a lower annex building that conceals building services and access to below-grade parking. A separate entrance and lobby on Park Place serves the residences. Amenities for the apartments are located on the 38th floor; the function rooms open to exterior loggias. The limestone and precast concrete shaft of the tower rises to a dramatic skyline profile of full-floor penthouses and setback terraces.
The West Beach Village Villa Check-In, a charming multi-functional Shingle-style structure situated to the northeast of West Beach, is the first building to welcome guests of West Beach Village and the point of departure for visitors. On arrival to the Villa Check-In, guests will pass under a porte-cochere before parking. The lobby, finished with hardwood floors, custom wood wainscot and custom paneling, is adjacent a lounge composed of similar elements and featuring a fireplace and over-sized windows. The porch, on axis with a new conference center, includes a comfortable seating area that is appointed with classical wood columns, a brick and bluestone terrace, and custom designed railings and lanterns. The second floor accommodates offices with views of the Cougar Point Clubhouse.
Cougar Point Golf Course, redesigned by Gary Player in 1996 and renovated in 2017, ranks as one of the top golf courses in South Carolina. Set on axis with the future West Beach Village Hotel, the picturesque Colonial Revival clubhouse will accommodate a pro shop, lounge, dining, and a bar overlooking the 18th green and fairway. An entry courtyard greets visitors arriving from the adjacent parking lot nestled into the landscape. The picturesque massing of the clubhouse, with splayed wings and sprawling porches, provides an iconic backdrop for an outstanding golf experience. Broad pillars, large shuttered windows, and dormers provide notes of formality to the rambling clubhouse with a refined contrast to the exterior, highlighted by a whimsical dormer-clock that faces the course. The interior continues the traditional aesthetic. The over-sized windows in the lobby create dramatic fairway views. The warm and welcoming dining room features a fireplace, oak-beamed ceiling with custom hoop brass light fixtures, and wainscot walls.
Our two residential buildings at Albany in the Bahamas hold down critical sites in a new marina village master-planned by Duany, Plater-Zyberk & Company. One acts as a gateway to the marina; the memorable profile of its narrow south facade greets visitors arriving by boat. The west facade anchors one end of the marina with an asymmetrical mass that steps down from north to south to afford the largest residences terraces that look south to the sea. Our other building presents a more symmetrical face to establish a more formal presence on the south-facing village green as well as on the small park to the north. The two buildings share a palette of stone, stucco, and wood shutters and pergolas inspired by the charming Colonial and vernacular architectural traditions of the islands.
Incorporating 378 hotel rooms, 528 Disney Vacation Club suites, 15,000 square feet of meeting space and 49,000 square feet of dining, beverage and retail facilities, Disney’s BoardWalk evokes a turn of the century resort town. Varied in the manner that the architecture of any small town might be, the BoardWalk joins the Disney Yacht and Beach Club Hotels to complete a lakeside resort district that possesses a unity of vision comparable to that of the Swan and Dolphin hotels on its west and to Epcot, immediately to its east. Porches, awnings, shutters, dormers, look-out towers and widow’s walks proliferate throughout the BoardWalk to create an intimate and varied experience. To the east lies the BoardWalk Hotel, with ground-level restaurants that open to the boardwalk promenade. Behind its waterfront facade, the hotel, which takes its architectural cue from rambling colonial revival-style hotels of New England, is arranged around a series of garden courts, each distinct, including quiet gardens and active settings for swimming and croquet. West of the entry tower, The Disney Vacation Club, in keeping with the sense of the BoardWalk as a resort town, consists of a series of interconnected small scale buildings facing the lakefront. Beyond the lakefront, where the vacation club faces a canal, the building takes on a larger scale with wide roof overhangs and bold horizontals reflecting the early 20th century American tradition that combined classicism with vernacular cottage architecture to create the Bungalow Style. Here the historical timeline of the resort town’s development is brought to its conclusion by an architecture that suggests the incipient modernism of the early twentieth century. The centerpiece of the Vacation Club is a themed swimming pool that also serves the hotel. Recalling a country fair that might have existed next to a resort town, the pool is a private but lively gathering spot for the resort. Adding to the collage effect of this town, the meeting facility that abuts the hotel is a sprawling bracketed Victorian-Gothic inspired hall such as might have served as the community social and cultural center of a seaside town one hundred years ago.
The 1,098-room Newport Bay Club Hotel evokes the tradition of grand American resorts, in particular that of Shingle Style seaside hotels along the northeast coast. Glimpsed across a lawn from the rond point, its 732-foot-long colonnaded porch is the symbolic gateway to the resort portion of Euro Disneyland. Arriving guests walk from the porte cochere into a painted wood-paneled double-height lobby and lounge, both providing direct views to the lake, which during the summer will be dotted with small paddleboats and sailboats. From the lobby and lounge, a staircase leads below to two restaurants that in warm weather open out onto the garden terrace. More informal than the front, the sprawling lakeside elevations of the hotel are punctuated by a profusion of figural elements that help break down the scale: towers, pergolas, dormers, and a lighthouse. To center the composition, a giant gambrel pediment serves as the culmination of the lake’s access.
This hotel – the first Disney-branded hotel in Japan – is part of a new shopping and entertainment district at the gateway to the Tokyo Disney Resort, comprised of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea theme parks. It is adjacent to the Maihama train station, the principal arrival point for visitors to the resort. The art moderne inspired design looks back to an architecture that represented the promise, magic, and glamour of a time when travel and movies were a romantic escape. The Disney Ambassador Hotel contains 500 guest rooms, facilities for banquets and weddings, four restaurants, and a Hollywood-style pool court.
This 1,000-room hotel is organized as a complex of two-story buildings conceived in the image of a nineteenth-century American western town, but filtered through the lens of Hollywood. Unlike its prototype, which has a hotel as just one of the buildings along Main Street, the Hotel Cheyenne is the town itself. At the principal crossroads, where a street leads to the Hotel Santa Fe across the creek, there is a restaurant and check-in building. While the streets of typical western towns ran in straight lines and opened to endless vistas of prairie and mountains, the streets of Hotel Cheyenne, like those of the “back-lot” western towns built by Hollywood studios, have vistas angled to screen out “backstage” areas from the cameramen and the actors who, in this case, are one and the same–the hotel guests.
Two hotels–with a combined total of 1,215 guest rooms, a 110,000-square-foot convention center, and a 35,000-square-foot “fantasy” pool–make up this resort complex adjacent to Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center. While both hotels draw their inspiration from America’s architectural past, each has a unique identity. The Yacht Club is reminiscent of the rambling, shingle-covered seaside resorts that were built toward the end of the last century in New England towns such as Newport, Marblehead, and Bar Harbor. The Beach Club is lighter, more airy in expression. It is modeled on the many Stick Style cottages and resorts that could be found in towns like Cape May, New Jersey.
The design of the Anglebrook Golf Club takes its cue from traditional golf club houses in Westchester, which were treated as large, casually massed country houses. This is reflected in the winding entrance road and forecourt, picturesque roofline of chimneys, gables and dormers, stucco walls, columned porches, and French doors and casement windows, as well as in the bluestone terraces and garden walls. The building consists of two parts: the clubhouse and a locker and starting lobby wing. An entrance hall connects the locker wing to the more formal clubhouse facilities (a lounge, a large high-ceilinged dining room, and smaller club-like dining room). From these rooms members will enjoy dramatic views of the surrounding bucolic 240-acre championship golf course.

Langham is an English fashioned brand dating back to 1865. Their first hotel was in London and an English classical style is very much part of their DNA. The client’s brief was to adhere to Langham’s core elements incorporating subtle tones and simple white classical panelling but to imbue the design with a sense of place. Smallwood challenge was to ensure the guest could recognise the principle elements of the LH brand while being cognisant of the references to the locale and its cultural heritage. Smallwood has kept to the LH ‘DNA’ incorporating white timber panelling to create a classical backdrop with contemporary furniture, lighting, and fittings to act as a counterpoint and instil a freshness to the overall design. Key pieces such as the ‘cellarette’, (a Langham signature element that houses the mini-bar, dry goods, wines and spirits) are maintained but designed in a more Sino-orientated style. Langham’s core operational requirements are therefore met while adding a sense of place within the overall scheme.
The client wanted a design that would appeal to the high-end market and aspirational clientele in Jakarta. As in Haikou, a strong sense of place was needed. The more opulent styling for a Jakarta clientele was contrary to the Operator’s more classically English pared-back design expectations and Smallwood challenge was to meld these two styles together into a cohesive design. Smallwood design for the hotel uses a classically ‘Langham’ white panelling backdrop but with more contemporary elements. Subtle use of metal and mirror added that touch of opulence and richness that the client wanted while not detracting from the core Langham DNA. Once again, classical rhythms of symmetry and proportion help to set the design in the classical style while giving the opportunity for finishes and FF&E to be light, tonal and fresh. The Langham Apartments have been designed in a similar fashion but with a more eclectic approach to both layout and colour palette. It is important that the Apartments have a sophisticated residential ambience that differs from the hotel guestrooms.
The Sheraton Grand Lahore is a 168-key hotel located in the cosmopolitan city of Lahore, Pakistan. The design has an elegant simplicity and sophistication that is the hallmark of the brand while subtle references to the locale are picked out in patterning and texture across the hotel. Predominantly local stones and other materials were selected to underpin the design and acknowledge the sense of place and vernacular of the city.
Morocco is an extraordinarily rich mixture of French, Moorish, Berber and other indigenous cultures and its capital Rabat is in fact two cities, the old town of Sale and its newer neighbour which is the political hub. The colour palette of northern coastal Morocco is a combination of whitewashed walls, blue and yellows in tiling and metalwork, and is markedly different from the richer, darker tones of Marrakech to the South. Smallwood took this light colour palette with its combination of predominantly white walls with the blues of the zellij tiles, and other blue tones to create a contemporary interior that reflects a sense of place. The decorative zellij tile geometry, so often picked out in strong colours of red, yellow, white, blue and azure is reduced to simple white as a contemporary take on a heritage element and repeats across the finishes of the hotel. Pattern dominates rather than colour. The bar lounge as an example with its conservatory roof celebrates combinations of local patterns picked out in black and white while the blue of the sky gives the essence of colour that echoes the blues of the roofs of the villages that surround Sale. The guestrooms continue this design language with black and white carpet and simple arched openings to the bathroom vanity and bedroom lobby. Smallwood was also responsible for the design of all of the branded residences of 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom apartments and the crisp white design language with subtle local references follows through into all the units.
The project consists of one of four villas on a large site in the embassy quarter of New Delhi. The architect had designed a neo-classical set of buildings and the client wanted this feeling to continue into the interiors. General public areas were laid out across the ground floor and Smallwood created a central sculptural stair that rose three floors to the private apartments above and acted as a central visual focus of the building. Smallwood clad the main lobbies is black filled travertine with inset panels and elsewhere light limestone predominates. This allowed the client a soft canvas against which he could place his art collection which included rugs, antique clocks and a range of fine paintings and sculptures from around the world. Each apartment floor was designed for a different member of the family and the interiors reflected their particular tastes while keeping within a general classic contemporary aesthetic.
The Daman building opposite the Four Seasons Hotel contains both offices and serviced apartments and from level 18 upwards, the hotel and branded residences. The client wanted no arabesque references at all, a refreshing change in a city where they are abundant. Instead, the interiors were to reflect the 60s styling of the exterior of the building (by RMJM). He summed up the design brief. ”Make it look like the interiors in the Mad Men television series”. With such a clear design brief, the development of the design was a particular pleasure especially as the design team had a strong affinity for mid-modern design. The site was not without its challenges with all of the public spaces of sky reception, Peacock Alley, Cigar Bar, Lounge Bar, Spa and gym on one level with an overall length of nearly 100 metres and a depth of only 15m. Smallwood created zones through which the guest travels to maximize the useable space while avoiding long corridors. The floors are picked out in beige, white and tan marble while simple timber panels clad the walls. Simple blues and tans predominate with 60s styled FF&E across the spaces. The guestrooms have two distinct but related colour schemes with light limed oak for the executive rooms and light grey oak for the standard.
Smallwood‘s second project in Phu Quoc, the design brief was to ensure a cool contemporary resort aesthetic with subtle references to the locale of the island. Given the location, Smallwood chose light oak as the main timber finish with polished ceramics to the floors and simple white paint on the walls. Jute rugs, rough-hewn timbers and subtle blues of the sea gave a relaxing resort aesthetic and was in keeping with the client’s very limited budget.
As a mixed-use project, the Mankhool development, situated behind the Burjuman Shopping Mall, comprises a hotel, serviced apartments, branded residences, and offices. Smallwood was to provide interior design services for all elements. The hotel and serviced apartments would follow an industrial ‘chic’ aesthetic, while the branded residences would feature a more typical contemporary styling that was felt was best suited to attracting new buyers. A third design scheme would be prepared for the offices with a contemporary slick theme. With its numerous restaurants, 3 Spas and multiple types of accommodation, Smallwood created two teams, one to design the industrial-chic elements of the project and another to design the branded residences and offices. The interiors of the hotel use exposed concrete, and rough-hewn timbers with terrazzo and polished concrete floors. As a counterpoint, the FF&E enriches the spaces with rich buttoned leather sofas and armchairs and soft fabrics and decorative lighting give a layering of detail and serve to soften the overall design. For the branded residences, simple painted walls and light oak floors gave a subtle palette for the owners to embellish with their own FF&E.
Quickly establishing itself as one of the premier high-rise luxury residential addresses in Atlanta, Sovereign features 82 residences in a vertically stacked mixed-use tower. The public spaces at Sovereign were designed to introduce a level of sophistication and warmth appropriate to this exclusive residential environment. Open, organic spaces are defined with subtly curved walls, countertops, stairs, and other carefully placed interior architectural features. Rich materials and finishes were introduced to add warmth and are consistent with the otherwise clean, elegant lines throughout. The spaces are furnished with a variety of distinctive seating groups, decorative lighting, and hospitality amenities. The residential lobby experience begins on the ground level at the dedicated Sovereign lobby. The character of the residential entrance was intended to be discrete and exclusive. The seventeen-foot high walls of the lobby are a combination of East Indian Rosewood, Sandstone in a subtle basketweave, leather, and hand-troweled Venetian plaster that complement the vein cut silver travertine floors. World-class resident amenities are located on levels 28 and 29. These amenities provide the residents with a variety of intimate entertainment venues that may be used simultaneously. They include a clubroom, pool lounge, landscaped pool terrace, private club room, catering kitchens, conference room, guest suite, art gallery and wine storage room.
High-end serviced apartments are an expanding business in Jakarta and it was important for the client to keep the project branded as a four-star deluxe but with an individual design that set it apart from its competition. The apartments would be opulent in finishes and ambience with an eclectic mix of furniture and fabrics. If anything, the four-star branding was to relate to the size of the apartments rather than the finishes of the interior. Sophisticated linens are used as wallcoverings with contrast dark timber millwork and show wood to the furniture. Back walls to headboards are finished in bevel-edged mirrors and fabrics in muted greys and golds.

Contract Projects by El Equipo Creativo is going to be in our lenses today! We will be exploring 10 outstanding and unique projects, covering hotels and restaurants. El Equipo Creativo is a Barcelona based interior design studio founded by the architects Oliver Franz Schmidt, Natali Canas del Pozo and Lucas Echeveste Lacy, specialised in creating gastronomic, commercial and brand flag spaces.
Since the studio’s foundation in 2010, El Equipo Creativo has been creating several projects which have been recognised in various international interior design awards, such as Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, The Great Indoors Awards, FX International Award, Best of the Year Award and AIT Interior Contract Award.
Kimpton Vividora Hotel opened its doors in February 2020 in Barcelona’s vibrant and well known Gothic Quarter, hence the design for the hotel had to have harmony between the Ciutat Vella, an artsy neighbourhood with an old body and young soul, and a luxury Kimpton Hotel design. The Vividora offers different public spaces that invite both guests and locals to enjoy, meet and interact; all of these spaces are a reflection of the local lifestyle showcasing handcrafted elements, local brands and art and colourful ceramic patterns.
The objective was to create a hotel where one could breathe a free and fun atmosphere with a disruptive touch, which would invite different types of public to enjoy the public areas of the hotel. The rooms, following the same philosophy, would invite both resting and playing. In the suite rooms, all furniture items are separated from the walls, to leave their historical details visible. The bed, in the centre of the room becomes the main protagonist. The suite rooms are accessed through the bathroom, covered with a the golden ceramic skin.
The reform of the well-known Crazy Pianos music club was the beginning of a new stage in its history. The new design should push their new commercial strategy, aimed at a more demanding audience from a wider age range. But without losing the essence of the original project: the music of two red life pianos and a fun, carefree atmosphere. El Equipo Creativo responded with a design rich in details and corners, full of winks and little crazy stories: an atmosphere that invites to get carried away and lose your mind. We conceived the space as a cinematographic sequence of a surreal film, which is gradually discovered as entering the venue. Each area is designed as a new scenography within this film.
Located on the emblematic Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona, Oassis Natural Cooking is in a relaxed, casual and fresh space: a pleasant oasis in the heart of the city. For its design, El Equipo Creativo drew inspiration from the terraces and inner patios of Barcelona’s superblocks, calm and relaxed places, spontaneous and full of vegetation. In these patios, we usually find an extraordinary mixture of textures and colours, typical of the party wall and the inner courtyards of the city: rough bricks, ceramics, lattices, concrete, worn paint and tiles. Colourful neon signs with ironic and funny messages provide the contrast point and inform the customers about the different gastronomic offers and bars of the restaurant. These add a young and modern touch to the interior.
The aim of the design is to enhance the views and to surround the customer with the specific landscape qualities of its location by the water. Sitting in the restaurant should be like sitting on a yacht deck staring at the sunset. The architecture of the building resembles that of a pavilion by the water. El Equipo Creativo design tries to enhance this idea of Mediterranean pavilion, a space that blurs interior space and exterior terraces, with just some vertical elements, a white sun-protecting lattice and the most incredible views around us.
The purpose of the project was to design a gastronomic space that will promote red tuna as a quality product and, at the same time, make the brand known to the general public. The interior design is intended to become another element of communication regarding the world of the red tuna. Each of the zones reflects a different aspect of the product and its capture. The principal area or Blue Room transports us to the depths of the sea.
As the name of the venue suggests, El Mama – La Papa, El Equipo Creativo’s client wanted to create a space that played upon duality and the mixture of opposites. In addition to food and drinks, a burlesque show would be offered to introduce a party atmosphere and dancing. Guests are welcomed by four large neon signs displaying oxymorons: Never – Again; Peace – Force; Holy – Hell; Public – Secret. The starting point leaves no doubt. The building in which it is located, an old canning warehouse, is a space with a great deal of personality as far as structure is concerned. To reinforce the presence of the original structure we decided to paint it in a striking red colour that unites the different areas within the space.
The fusion of Japanese and Brazilian cuisines introduced an interesting challenge in the design of the restaurant, a challenge based on the search of shared singularities between two cultures, antagonistic at first sight: quiet and minimalist the Japanese, lush and bustling the Brazilian. From the beginning, the idea of creating a landscape became the leitmotif of the project, since nature is a very important element in both cultures. The Ikebana, the traditional Japanese floral art to which the name of the restaurant refers, arranges small static compositions that simulate a movement and look for the right proportion, composition and balance between three elements: wood, leaves and flowers or colour. The restaurant design is based on these principles, seeking to create an artificial landscape in constant motion composed of natural and noble materials.
The objective of Andina Notting Hill was to celebrate the uniqueness and authenticity of Peru. The design creative process started with a trip to dive into the Andean culture and get inspired by colours, flavours, traditions and most of all by Picanterias, the restaurant at the heart of communities across the Andes. The Restaurant echoes the most traditional Peruvian Picanteria. El Equip Creativo proposed an open kitchen with light wood shelves, hanging pots and pans, plants, flowers and a dark orange rustic finish recalling the domestic hearth. Light oak lattices rise from the soft velvet banquette and create a screen on the ceiling, a modern homage to the common wicker of Andean Picanterias.
Based on the premise of ‘a home away from home’ the design translates the idea of daily life and festive spirit of villages in Spain and all around the world. Bellavista del Jardín del Norte, meaning ‘Beautiful View of the Garden in the North’, references to the large garden in the back. This is a surprising oasis in the centre of Barcelona and inspired the name of the restaurant as if it was the name of a small town. The entrance greets guests with thousands of hanging flowers reminiscent of flower feasts.

1508 London based themselves on the hotel’s principles of bespoke, intuitive, discrete and intimate design of the spa area. The concept design creates a distinctive Club and Spa facility that maintains a tangible connection with the operations and stylistics of the renovated hotel. The design considers the proposition resonantly and holistically and, with consideration to the quintessential originals of wellness, the studio sought to create ‘a Uniquely British Spa’. Each space and functional setting has its own unique character, signature materiality and beauty; each flowing intuitively and harmoniously together. The Roman Bath Spa is a key inspiration: rhythmic ceremonial spaces carved from one material and subtly layered spaces creating intuitive and celebratory journeys through sequentially intimate areas.

In this new build hotel, the layering of materials and feature elements help create an atmospheric spa and add a level of privacy. 1.Hotel Interior Designs by AvroKO – Eaton Hong Kong
Once a business hotel in the 90s, Eaton is a reinvented hotel in Kowloon, Hong Kong, designed to build community and to inspire creative collaboration and activism. AvroKO takes inspiration from the evocative nostalgia of 1950s and 60s Hong Kong, such as decades-old neon signs, shopfronts, and textures. As soon as guests entre the hotel, they are welcomed with a sense of connectivity between space and program.
Incorporated throughout the hotel is vermillion red metalwork, high-contrast terrazzo with large grain aggregate, neon lighting, and richly-coloured tile in subtle and changeable patterns. The Eaton Hong Kong has a food hall occupying two floors with the hotel’s restaurant – Astor on the lower level. The outdoor terrace is home to the cocktail bar – Terrible Baby – and in the basement is the Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant – Yat Tung Heen, offering the best flavours of the region.
2.Hotel Interior Designs by AvroKO – Canopy, Philadelphia
The Canopy by Hilton Philadelphia was inspired by the golden era of department stores, specifically the ones on East Market Street, which helped shape the modern shopping experience in the United States. A modern interpretation of the building’s Beaux-Arts architecture is exemplified in the stepped ceiling trims, simple curved moulding and both bold and contrasting wall panelling.
Throughout the public spaces, references to varying storefronts and display cases are illustrated displaying everything from artwork to retail items. The design also pays respect to the ‘big fashion’ movement by incorporating bold colours, patterning on fabrics, and pops of metallic detailing for added glitz and glamour.
3.Hotel Interior Designs by AvroKO – Single Thread, California
Single Thread‘s design inspiration came from the owners – Kyle and Katina Connaughton; AvroKO created a dining experience akin to spend an evening where diners are given the opportunity to both observe the artistic process and enjoy its end product.
Tribute to the couple’s love for farming, gardening and molecular gastronomy can also be found throughout the space: woven patterns within the dining room screens reference to common kitchen herbs such as basil and shallots, while a rooftop fountain has a series of stepped recesses and grooves based on golden sections and naturally occurring scientific proportions which catch water and alter the flow.
4.Hotel Interior Designs by AvroKO – The Scott, Arizona
Formerly the Firesky Resort & Spa, The Scott is a full-scale resort in Scottsdale, Arizona available for both business and leisure travellers. Riffing off of the property’s original Spanish Revival-inspired architecture, AvroKO incorporated Bauhaus and old Havana inspirations to create a layered atmosphere.
The property is lined with caning screens that contrast with the modern, curved brass of Bauhaus-inspired chandeliers, and rattan settees are scattered throughout, reflecting an eclectic style of traditional front porch Havana. Blue-glazed olive jars and indoor landscaping create an intimate seating oasis for guests.
5.Hotel Interior Designs by AvroKO – The Huxton Hotel, Chicago
For the food & beverage spaces at Chicago’s Hoxton hotel, AvroKO has created a narrative weaving together the richness and warmth of the American Crafts movement, the celebratory spirit of 1930’s post-prohibition Chicago, and the eccentric vision of Edgar Miller, a Chicago artist who flouted formal education to create his own learning laboratory through his work.
6.Hotel Interior Designs by AvroKO – Calistoga Motor Lodge & Spa, California
The design for Calistoga Motor Lodge & Spa is truly inspired by the nostalgia surrounding the great American road trip. During the 50s, 60s & 70s, families & friends would pack up the car, camper van or motor home and travel throughout the country to National Parks, amusement parks, summer camps, and everything in between. Certainly, this retro nod is evident through the colour palette, full of navy & light blues, mustard yellow, shades of green: woven & striped fabric selections, and furniture & lighting styles ranging from mid-century through the 1970s.
The interiors, as well as the brand identity, gleaned inspiration from graphic moments one might encounter during mobile adventurings, such as gas stations and truck stops, faux wood-panelled vehicles, sports uniforms, while much of the guest experience and styling moments feature ‘analogue’ leisure of decades past, such as hula hooping and jump rope.
7.Hotel Interior Designs by AvroKO – Perry Lane Hotel, Georgia
The Perry Lane Hotel provides a much-needed luxury hotel experience in Savannah, Georgia, where sophistication and vibrancy are brought to locals and visitors alike. AvroKO looked into Savannah’s history and culture to devise a scheme that was relatable and relevant to its location while at the same time modern and appealing to the contemporary traveller.
From the lounge and library to the screening room and bar, an intimacy of scale enforces a spirit of camaraderie and surprise. Upstairs, the rooftop bar and pool serve as a counterpoint to the initial impression. They speak to America’s most glamorous era, combining a knack for dressing up with an affinity for socializing and relaxing together in style. Guestrooms have their own regional classical vernacular that was inspired by the great mansions of Savannah — palatial in scale, rich in detail.
8.Hotel Interior Designs by AvroKO – Arlo Soho, New York
Designed as a haven, respite and gathering place for urban explorers, the new Arlo brand was conceptualised and designed by Brand Bureau, and the hotel interior designs by AvroKO. Each Arlo hotel boasts a multitude of public spaces – including a music room where guests can explore tunes from a variety of eras and genres, built to accommodate a flurry of activities throughout the day.

Guests can socialise and relax, work and meet, or dine and drink in the common spaces, connecting with other guests. The compact, efficient, and carefully-considered guest room designs feature warm, high-touch materials and clever elements like fold-down desks and closets with adjustable hanging pegs, which anticipate the needs of guests.
10.Hotel Interior Designs by AvroKO – 1 Hotel Central Park, New York
Based on the concepts of simplicity and transparency, AvroKO focused on bringing a conscious approachability to the design coupled with the use and celebration of natural materials for Barry Sternlicht’s first solo hotel project with Starwood Capital Group. AvroKO was able to embrace the pre-existing remnants of the building’s architecture, including exposed concrete ceilings and floors, steel columns and beams, and terracotta block masonry walls.
Natural materials were brought into space in their raw form including woods and textiles, celebrating their original markings, veining, knots, and colour variation. Locally sourced materials were used wherever possible, including a salvaged water tank wood branded with its source used to encapsulate the wall behind the bed, as well as river stones, plant species, linen screens, and leathers all produced upstate.

Kimpton Vividora Barcelona was designed by Barcelona’s own design firm El Equipo Creativo, having won Best Interior Design in Spain 2019 award. The Kimpton Vividora offers a unique and genuine local experience with a design that reflects Barcelona’s lifestyle, exuding a fresh, cheerful and elegant atmosphere. Kimpton Hotels are known to be unique boutique hotels that offer genuine and local experiences. For the Kimpton Vividora, El Equipo Creativo had the challenge of creating a hotel with a local approach, handcrafted and custom-designed, with spaces that reflect Barcelona’s lifestyle and architecture.
El Equipo Creativo is a Barcelona based interior design studio founded by the architects Oliver Franz Schmidt, Natali Canas del Pozo and Lucas Echeveste Lacy, specialised in creating gastronomic, commercial and brand flag spaces. Since the studio’s foundation in 2010, El Equipo Creativo has been creating several projects which have been recognised in various international interior design awards, such as Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, The Great Indoors Awards, FX International Award, Best of the Year Award and AIT Interior Contract Award.
Kimpton Vividora Hotel opened its doors in February 2020 in Barcelona’s vibrant and well known Gothic Quarter, hence the design for the hotel had to have harmony between the Ciutat Vella, an artsy neighbourhood with an old body and young soul, and a luxury Kimpton Hotel design. The Vividora offers different public spaces that invite both guests and locals to enjoy, meet and interact; all of these spaces are a reflection of the local lifestyle showcasing handcrafted elements, local brands and art and colourful ceramic patterns.
The Kimpton Vividora has 156 guestrooms, 10 of which are suites, three restaurants and bars, a rooftop terrace and a pool offering unique views of the city. Every guestroom and suite’s design was inspired by a stylish Barcelona apartment, with a Mediterranean colour palette, natural wood, sleek marble, subtle graphic motifs and bold tiles, and locally designed and crafted furniture and artwork. The rooms’ also present Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year – Classic Blue.
The Classic Blue is also present at the hotel’s main restaurant – Fauna. Fauna was inspired by the warmth of an elegant Barcelona home with mosaic floors, walls covered in colourful tiles and high ceilings. Fauna’s menu was created by Catalan’s Chef Ferran López, offering a culinary experience rooted in Mediterranean flavours and traditional family recipes.
On the ground floor, Cafè Got has floor to ceiling windows offering local coffee – NOMAD, Catalan cheeses, natural wines, homemade vermouths and signature cocktails by Adrià Batlle. Terraza de Vivi, the rooftop of Kimpton Vividora, is the city’s newest oasis. With a beautiful swimming pool, sun loungers, pergolas and lush greenery, this rooftop offers an ingenious selection of cocktails combined with small creative dishes from the bar, all with panoramic views of the city.

Moxy Chelsea Hotel sets a new standard for contemporary boutique hotels in New York, being designed by superb Rockwell Group and Yabu Pusherlberg. Located in Manhattan’s historic Flower District, the Moxy Chelsea’s restaurant, lounge and rooftop provide a unique and luxurious escape from the city’s busy streets. The Moxy Chelsea’s interiors combine layers of vibrant colours, materials, patterns and forms, to create a welcoming and dynamic design thus being a highly sophisticated and curated environment fit for both the business and leisure traveller.
The Rockwell Group, created in 1984 by David Rockwell and led by his partners Shawn Sullivan and Greg Keffer. The firm gives a strong importance to innovation and guarantees that every project has the best leadership. Although the firm is based in New York, it has a satellite office in Madrid. The Rockwell Group specialises in a large range of products from hospitality to healthcare projects and even those concerning education.
Yabu Pushelberg was founded in 1980 by the design duo George Yabu and Glenn Pusherlberg, with a focus on interior design that then developed into a multidisciplinary practice that addresses multiple layers of the human experience. With offices in New York and Toronto and a team of more than a hundred creatives and professionals, Yabu Pushelberg designs buildings, interiors, landscapes, lighting, furniture, objects, and graphics with a focus that goes well beyond what things look like, to how they make people feel.
Moxy Chelsea marks the second collaboration between Yabu Pushelberg and Rockwell Group, the designers behind Moxy Times Square.
The Moxy Chelsea Hotel was designed having in consideration younger generations – the millennial gen in specific -, this the hotel forsook room service and a concierge in favour of co-working spaces for guests and non-guests alike, a coffee bar with a grab-and-go breakfast, and lunch and evening items on sale on the ground floor.
The Moxy Chelsea has 350 bedrooms designed by the NYC interior design studio Yabu Pushelberg, creating stylish and highly functional rooms, with floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows. Bathrooms are two frosted glass boxes, for the shower and the WC, while the sink is in the bedroom to save space. There’s a wall of pegs in place of a wardrobe, a steamer instead of an iron, storage drawers beneath the bed, and both the table and luggage rack can be hung on the wall when not in use.
The Moxy Chelsea’s dining offers Italian dishes with a New York twist. TAO Group debuts Feroce Ristorante, Feroce Caffè, and Feroce Pizza & Bocce – brand-new dining and drinking concepts in partnership with Francesco Panella of the legendary Antica Pesa in Rome and Brooklyn. Topping off the hotel is The Fleur Room, a glass-enclosed rooftop lounge with panoramic views.
The hotel’s Italian restaurant ‘Feroce‘ consists of a series of beautifully curated rooms that lead to the outdoor terrace, a hidden oasis amongst the foliage for guests to wine, dine and socialise. Injecting a sense of playfulness and colour into the restaurant, collections of apothecary candy jars contain bold coloured Italian sweets, positioned on glass and brass shelving, alongside aperitif and digestif bottles that create an unexpected juxtaposition that sets the tone for the Moxy brand which runs through the entirety of the hotel.
The Fleur Room interiors are comprised of a lively palette of materials. Rough concrete and industrial windows are mixed with polished bronze, warm wall coverings and plush furnishings, merging industrial and chic styles. Subdued indirect lighting both reinforces the spectacular views and heightens the intimacy of the space, while inverted resin pyramids glow with embedded florals, referencing the surrounding Garden District.

Hotel June is a newly open boutique hotel near Venice Beach that has the atmosphere of a Baja beach resort right in Los Angeles vibrant Westside. The Studio Collective was responsible for Hotel June‘s interior design bringing the sandy neutrals, sunset pinks and ocean blues palette to this beautiful hotel.
Hotel June showcases not only great interior design but also groundbreaking architecture, done by the firm Kollin Altomare Architects. The architecture firm had the challenge of honouring and preserving the work of the legendary architect Welton Beckett whilst also reimagining the original structure. The result is a magnificent work of conservancy and creativity with oversized windows and a patterned façade that add depth and dimension to rooms and corridors.
Hotel June‘s interiors are filled with warm wood tones combined with pale blues and whites create a soothing environment with custom-made furniture by Jay Edwards and lights by Ashley Lighting as well as murals and art by local artists.
The Hotel June has 250 rooms, which include 21 suites, furnished in mid-century furniture and sandy neutrals fabrics, charcoal greys and ocean blues, have sliding bathroom barn doors and pops of colour with sisal carpets; the bathrooms are clad in pale-blue tiles that recall the nearby Pacific.
Hotel June’s restaurant and bar mix Mexican flavours with the vibrant bounty of California, creating a menu that takes guests on a trip from Santa Barbara to Northern Baja. The Caravan Swim Club is the hotel’s poolside gathering place from drinks to fire pit gatherings, creative meetings to laid-back lounging.
The Club offers local caught grilled fish, organic steaks, seasonal salads, bright oysters, paired with biodynamic wines, craft beer and tequilas. The hotel’s inside bar is located next to the lobby, clad in marble also offering natural wine, craft beers, tequilas, mezcals and cocktails.

Zentis Osaka is an elegant boutique hotel in downtown Osaka, having opened for the postponed Tokyo Olympics back in June 2020. The interiors were designed by the London interior design firm Tara Bernerd & Partners, presenting a minimal and elegant contemporary European residential feel.
British designer Tara Bernerd, the founder of Tara Bernerd & Partners, is known to create unique projects, with a beautiful signature style that mixes luxury with an industrial edge, and timeless elegance. All projects created by the studio reflect the style and traditions of the location and the people where the project is located.
The Zentis Osaka was created with the concept of developing encounters of a new kind – the place where chance encounters lead to unexpected acquaintances and where inspiring experiences reveal a new perspective. Zentis Osaka‘s design is a combination of raw materials with a natural colour palette with exposed brick and timber beams. The hotel has two hundred and twelve rooms on polished wooden floors, a stone staircase and splashes of mustard by bold commissioned works of local Japanese artists.
The Zentis Osaka embraces guests in natural light alongside bookcases, plants, sofas and crafted textures right at the lobby, with a clean-lined grass fireplace connecting the lounge area with an outdoor terrace. A blue limestone staircase leads to Upstairz, the hotel’s lounge, bar and restaurant.
Most of the rooms at the Zentis Osaka are studios with walk-in showers designed in sage green tiles. The hotel rooms’ design are in compact modular segments with a soft modern palette of neutral textures and strong calligraphic brushstroke artworks above the beds, round ceramic tables and mid-century inspired wooden chairs.
The Upstairz Lounge, Bar and Restaurant is lead by Michelin-starred Chef Shinya Otsuchihashi and his team, who brings out the natural flavours and textures of seasonal ingredients in a mix of French and Japanese cuisine.

Located in the World Heritage City Bergen, the Moxy has a waterfront location that offers unparalleled views overlooking Norway’s famed fjords. The Moxy Bergen is an energetic alternative to a typical hotel experience in the city, with a playful design inspired by its destination; the interior design of the hotel has a focus on natural elements with wooden furniture and installations.
Kuda Villingili, located in the North Malé Atoll in the Maldives, is preparing to open its doors to luxury travellers on the hunt for an island getaway. A member of the new luxury boutique hotel management company – Epoque Collection – OMMA Santorini is a five-star property secluded on a hilltop that offers a journey through all the senses from the outside architecture to the interior design. Tsingpu Tulou Retreat is one of three destinations designed by Wang Gongquan: the Tulou Retreat is located in Fujian, Zhangzhou, the Yangzhou Retreat in Jiangsu, Yangzhou and the Lijiang Baisha Retreat in Yunnan, Lijiang. All three retreats redefine resort life, with a humane approach, where everyone can get close to nature, experience art and culture, discover the wisdom of life and develop self-growth.
Tsignpu Tulou Retreat is located in the mountain interiors of the Fujian province and has five traditional tulou structures that used to be family homes before being transformed into a unique luxurious hotel. Three of these buildings were built during the latter time of the Qing Dynasty, showcasing an ancient rammed-earth and wooden-architecture style.
Tsingpu Tulou Retreat‘s interiors have green slate, warm wood and Chinese fir unite with column and beams from the ancient neighbourhood structures that highlight traditional craftsmanship. Finolhu Maldives Resort opened its doors in 2016 and quickly became one of the best beach resorts in the Maldives. The resort hotel encompasses four islands, allowing guests to immerse themselves in different worlds. The Finolhu is a five-star resort hotel that recently became a member of Design Hotels, the first of the region, having also entered TripAdvisor’s 2021 Awards List.
The Finolhu Resort condenses selected European luxury with striking design finishes such as sheep sculptures, old-school telephones, record players and rustic signs. The resort is ideal for those seeking tranquillity and turquoise blue seas. The Finolhu island was acquired in 2019 by Germany’s Seaside Collection, giving it a distinctively European-style hotel philosophy that embraces the types of carefree, beachside gatherings.
Finolhu Maldives harmonises nostalgia with sleek contemporary surroundings in a paradise island with energy and feels that sets itself apart from other hotels in the same region. The resort recently underwent a renovation that brought luxury and lifestyle closer. This refurbishment was overseen by the award-winning London studio Muza Lab. The studio’s founder Inge Moore created a kaleidoscope design concept, taking influence from the fragmentation of light on the blue-toned water and the many purple, pink and apricot colours of the sunset.
The Finolhu has one hundred and twenty-five guest villas that also adopt the kaleidoscope concept that is featured throughout the resort, characterised by a mesmerising blend of colours and symmetrical patterns, complemented by the island’s natural beauty. The two-bedroom Rockstar Villas are bright and colourful and are perfect for big families or groups of friends.
The Beach Villas and the Beach Pool Villas are a great option for those seeking privacy, all of the villas have their own beautifully landscaped gardens, and many have their own private swimming pools. Another amazing feature of Seaside Finolhu is its iconic Beach Bubble. The first of its kind in the Maldives, the bubble is located in a secluded spot along Seaside Finolhu’s marvellous sandbank and is exclusively available for guests wishing to enjoy a uniquely romantic night under the stars.
The Fehi Spa consists of ten treatment rooms, individually surrounded by the lush greenery of the island. Guests can expect to journey back to nature with treatments using local ingredients, such as coconut oil and coconut milk including Fehi’s signature Maldivian Healing Treatment, which involves a coconut oil massage, a warm sand poultice and a coconut milk glaze.
The hotel’s Michelin-trained chef, Memo Hernandez, leads Finolhu Resort’s culinary experiences across the resort’s four restaurants, where every table comes with a spectacular view. The culinary team brings an exquisite mix of artisanship, individuality and international flair with fresh produce and ingredients being a key focus behind the cuisine.
The four restaurants at the resort take guests on a gastronomic journey with modern Japanese and Asian cuisine at Kanusan; flavours of the Middle East and North Africa at the Arabian Grill; Italian, Asian, Maldivian and fresh seafood dishes at Beach Kitchen; and fresh seafood platters at Crab Shack. The Beach Bar is the heart of the resort, bringing European beach club vibes, with laid-back beats and exotic cocktails that can be enjoyed throughout the day and late into the evening.

Minos Beach Art Hotel is located in Crete, Greece, and is a glorious assembly of waterfront bungalows and gardens that extend the coastline, enabling guests to connect with the island as well as experience art in its many forms and guests can nourish themselves on authentic Cretan food and wine.
Minos Beach Art Hotel opened its doors in 1963 at the start of Greek’s tourism golden ages when the country was starting to become one of the favourite destinations for the international jet-set crowd. The hotel has a laidback boho style with wood and glass elements mixed with mineral colours. The stone-paved walkway looping along the extensive seafront gives a wonderful sense of space.
Artwork inspired by natural surroundings and the island’s heritage has been specially created for the hotel and its garden. Guests can find some G.&A Mamidakis Foundation art collection is found in the hotel and its Open Art Air Museum, while muted colours, tactile fabrics, natural woods, and the occasional artefact from a bygone era keep things minimalistic, inside and out. Sound and nature also play a key role in the design: trickling water soothes the mind and a lonely piano invites the creative flourish of a passerby.
The Minos Beach Art Hotel has one hundred and twenty-six exterior rooms, bungalows, suites and villas designed with modern lines with blond wood elements, wicker baskets and earthy ethnic prints thrown into relief by powder-white walls. Bathrooms have trough sinks and spacious rain showers – some rooms have bathtubs. All rooms have terraces and most have a sea front view.
The hotel has three restaurants, four bars and a kafenio – a traditional coffee shop – lead by the award-winning chef Giannis Baxevanis. Austin Proper Hotel is located in the buzzing commercial and cultural 2nd Street District, Austin, emerging tall in its contemporary 32 floors high. The hotel’s interior design draws inspiration from the area’s historic, craftsman-style architecture.
Kelly Wearstler, an internationally renowned interior designer, conceived the Austin Proper Hotel with incorporated Art Noveau and Arts & Crafts motifs alongside traditional joinery techniques, textures and materials. The hotel’s lobby welcomes guests by an imposing wooden staircase covered in vintage carpets and dotted with pots by local ceramicist Rick Van Dyke.
The Austin Proper Hotel embraces Austin’s eclecticism with Japanese ‘shou-sugi-ban‘ wooden slats and graphite grey metals; the interiors are a celebration of leaded windows, stained glass, succulent plantings, and vintage Turkish rugs. The Austin Proper Hotel’s check-in area is separated from the main lobby and features a brass ceiling fixture by the artist Massimiliano Locatelli.
The Austin Proper Hotel has 244 rooms and suites designed in rich autumnal colours, with an eclectic mix of ceramics and artwork. The use of hardwood flooring and travertine creates an organic backdrop to tactile furnishings designed by Kelly Wearstler, with luxurious beds covered in Fili D’oro and Bellino linens. The bathrooms are in marble, illuminated by metallic sconces with spacious rain showers and bathtubs.
The hotel’s restaurant and bar feature metal panels in graphite grey, flowing from inside out, blending with the other communal spaces of the hotel. The menu is prepared by McGuire Moorman Hospitality, with the ground-floor restaurant Peacock Mediterranean Grill serves dishes inspired by Israeli and Turkish classics, while the poolside La Piscina is a Mexican-inspired restaurant and terrace complete with a wood-burning grill and raw bar. A fifth-floor rooftop pool deck offers the ultimate chic urban relaxation with panoramic city views and small-batch tequila on tap.

The Portuguese architecture studio OITOEMPONTO was appointed in 2019 to breathe new life into the guest rooms and suites at the iconic hotel.
Four Seasons Hotel Lisbon also opened a new restaurant – CURA – where the Chef and head culinary curator Pedro Pena Bastos meticulously selects ingredients, drawing from Lisbon’s rich regional palette to create seasonal, artisanal dishes such as squid with hazelnut, bergamot, roasted seaweed butter and Ossetra caviar.
The Pestana Palácio do Freixo is a five-star hotel and was classified in 1910 as a National Monument due to being a unique example of Baroque architecture. W Algarve was due to open in April, however it was postponed to October 2021. The hotel is the first resort project outside of Asia for the interior design studio AB Concept who have been working closely with Divercity Architects. W Algarve will have one-houndred and thrity-four rooms and suites as well as eighty-three residences with a modern style harmonised with local influences.
Each room connects with large private balconies, while duplex living adds style to the WOW suites, all offering coastal rooftop views. AB Concept, led by Ed Ng and Terence Ngan, has taken the region’s rugged coastlines, green meadows and vineyards as inspiration for the interior design scheme, using sandy neutrals, greens and blues throughout the hotel.
