The Modernist Hotel, A Boutique Gem in the Heart of Athens

The Modernist Hotel Athens offers a unique hospitality experience at the heart of the historical centre of Athens. The Modernist Athens is sister to the award-winning Modernist Thessaloniki, being the second landmark in the expanding hospitality brand created by Kostis Karatzas.

The Modernist Athens maintains the same playful nearness of art deco elements with mid-century detailing and Scandinavian design found in Modernist Thessaloniki. Located in the former Canadian Embassy in Kolonaki, a high-end neighbourhood, Modernist Athens welcomes guests in a relaxed, elegant environment.

The Modernist Athens‘ building has the minimalism of post-war architecture from the 1950s harmonised with the subtle sleek contemporary spaces. Staying true to the brand’s design philosophy, the Modernist Athens is a sight to behold amidst the cityscape.

Upon the hotel entrance, guests are met with a contemporary mix of hues and materials, which include marble, plaster, bronze and black glass. The breakfast buffet, located on the ground floor, doubles as an all-day cafe bar. The hotel’s common areas are complete with the rooftop garden, which has an open cinema, and beautiful views of Athens and the Acropolis.

The Modernist Athens has thirty-eight rooms divided into four categories: small, medium, large and extra-large, making it easier for guest to pick the one that best fits their individual needs, and the latter rooms (the extra-large) have a private jacuzzi.  Most of the furniture, lighting and uniforms of both Modernist hotels are custom-made by local artisans.

‘The Modernist is about contemporary hospitality that inspires curiosity and authentic experiences,’ says Kostis Karatzas about the project. ‘Ethics and aesthetics course through everything we do, as an invisible thread that connects us with the world. Following the opening of our first property in Thessaloniki two years ago, Athens was a natural next step for us. and this is only the beginning for our brand.’

Belle Etoile Suite at Hotel Le Maurice, Dream Design by Lally & Berger
Boutique Hotels, Europe

Belle Etoile Suite at Hotel Le Meurice, Dream Design by Lally & Berger

It was in 1907 that the Hotel Le Meurice inaugurated a roof garden, originally conceived as a summer restaurant. Nowadays, the 7th and top floor of the hotel is solely devoted to the Belle Etoile Suite, which is housed in a structure added in the 50s, designed by Lally & Berger. BRABBU makes a statement in this interior design elevating the project to more refined decor.

With 250m2 of interior space and 350m2 private terrace, it offers guests breath-taking and exceptional views of the monuments of Paris like the Louvre, the Orsay Museum and the Eiffel Tower. The unveiling of the Belle Etoile Suite, this summer, was the high point of this project, with its terrace transformed with the help of the French landscape architect, Pierre-Alexandre Risser.

“We wanted to accentuate what makes this suite so incredible and unique: its exceptional situation. You have the impression that you’re all alone in Paris with the city at your feet and it’s as if all its monuments were there just for you. You never get tired of looking at them” says Luc Berger.

The entry foyer was inspired by the halls of town mansions. The space features a handrail sculpted with bronze branches and a stately chandelier in the form of leaves: a nod to the neighbouring Tuileries Gardens and the image of the hanging garden evoked by the Suite’s terrace. The gilded bronze of the handrail gives it a precious appearance.

An area devoted to reading and contemplation also makes part of this amazing project. The study is completed with art books chosen at the nearby Galignani bookstore converse with shelves composed of strips of brushed brass, arranged in an irregular pattern.

On either side of it are two vintage mirrors. They hang on aged-oak panels, decorated with gold-leaf details, which underline the 18th-century-style of the architecture. Each of the different areas in the living area is separated by columns, into which the designers have integrated soft plaster wall lights.

Here, BRABBU makes a statement with customized MAYA armchairs. Maya civilization had maize as one of the primary elements of their culture. Personified as a woman, Maya’s Maize God was the inspiration behind this product. MAYA armchairs are also present in an amazing resting area, with a stunning view above the city of Paris.

“For me, one of the most successful things about the project is the way you’ve created an architectural rhythm in the living room”, says the designer Luc Berger.

While entering the bedroom, the views are completely open to Paris. Two custom “totems” or partitions separate the bedroom into several areas: the dressing room towards the bathroom offers a stunning panorama over Montmartre; the bedroom in the centre has views on either side; the desk near the entrance welcomes guests. A shell in staff descends from the ceiling, creating a contemporary floating element by day and an outsized light fixture by night.

The marble-clad bathroom was little altered, largely retaining its luxurious, elegant décor from before. The bathtub was simply enlarged and equipped with the functions of a Jacuzzi. New vanities were made from hammered brass, which helps to warm up the atmosphere, as do the bronze taps. An oak dressing table placed opposite the view of the Montmartre breaks with the radical, symmetrical lines of the room and adds a more intimate touch. In a similar fashion, the surrounding garden has been conceived to offer a greater sense of privacy.

In order to make the building independent, a metal plate with a circular hole is used to separate it from the surrounding environment. Light penetrates through the circular hole and spots are reflected on the wall like sparkling water. Shuttle in the light and shadow, like a dream and illusion. The twelve guest rooms of Bole Art Hotel are all facing the river. Surrounded by the natural landscape, space is more unique and touching.

The 5-star hotel situated at the Inner Alster Lake in Hamburg offers the perfect oasis for a luxury holiday in the city with its beautiful hotel spa. The Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg offers 9 restaurants and bars. Discover the 2 Michelin star restaurant Haerlin, the Jahreszeiten Grill and Hamburg`s HotSpot No. 1, the NIKKEI NINE, on a culinary journey.

Recently, the classic luxurious hotel Fairmont Germany had a full decor renovation. All five floors including a total of 156 elegant rooms and luxurious suites, suffered a re-look, gaining an exciting new style which combines precious fabrics and international design ideas. BRABBU was one of the brands whose pieces were specified to this project. The design chosen was Nº20 Armchair

Six fresh and unconventional yet classy and timeless colour schemes were defined to the project. Bright, creamy nuances are pleasantly contrasted by accentuating highlight colours in gold, kiwi green, powder blue, carmine and light purple. Every room is different from the other, the same happens with each floor. Every little detail is considered whether regarding decoration or lighting. Details make the difference. BRABBU’s Nº20 Armchair was picked to the classic hotel luxurious suites. The standard version is fully upholstered in twill with golden polished nails in the back. The ones used in the hotel project have different fabrics and colours and the legs are in the wood, not upholstered. All of them have nails in the back, recalling the mid-century modern style. It’s a very elegant and cosy armchair that perfectly fits the décor, in harmony with the ambience’s other elements.

No two rooms are alike; each one is a unique masterpiece. The jewel in the crown is the Bel Etage: after all, the rooms and suites on the fifth floor boast balconies with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Alster lake and are the perfect place to relax and unwind. The new and contemporary design in keeping with the aura of a grand hotel creates an exceptionally refreshing appearance, with different colour schemes brought to life in an effective yet subtle manner in the rooms.

Parker Palm Springs, One of the Most Luxurious and Exclusive Hotels
By Region, Luxury Hotels, North America & Canada

Parker Palm Springs, One of the Most Luxurious and Exclusive Hotels

Parker Palm Springs is one of Palm Springs‘ most luxurious and exclusive hotel destinations. Recognised for its beautiful sunny weather, towering avenues, and signature mid-century modern architecture, Palm Springs is a design destination that attracts visitors from around the globe, looking to experience its unique glamour and charm. The Parker Hotel is nestled behind a tall wall of palms, foliage and blooms.

Constructed in 1959, the 144-room hotel has had a fascinating history. The site was originally home to California’s very first Holiday Inn before being purchased in 1961 by Gene Autry to house his baseball team, the California Angels, during their spring training. It was in 1998 when the hotel was purchased by Merv Griffin and renamed Merv Griffin’s Resort Hotel and Givenchy Spa. Five years later, Hotelier Jack Parker purchased the resort and hired designer Jonathan Adler to complete a remodel, transforming the resort into an internationally recognised design destination. Jonathan Adler returned to the hotel in 2017 with the task of updating the interiors, introducing cheeky hedonistic luxury and a lot of  Californian glamour.

Every space of the hotel, from the rooms and suites to the restaurants and communal areas, is defined by a characterful personality and style. Eccentrically beautiful curations of antiques, art, and mid-century gems inspire the colour schemes, patterns and materials used, giving every item a sense of belonging. From the moment guests walk through the breeze block brise soleil and iconic orange front doors, one cannot help but smile as the Parker transports you into a world that is anything but ordinary.

The lobby stretches the length of the main building, grouped into several seating areas that allow guests to sit back, relax, and socialise in a more intimate setting. At the entrance, the reception desk is located to one side, allowing attention to remain on the decor. Plush rugs in a range of colours, shapes and, styles, frame varying collections of sofas, armchairs, and coffee tables. At the heart of the lobby, adjacent to the ‘Mini Bar‘, is a double-height seating space, arranged beneath a large mid-century gold chandelier. The hugely photographed ‘Drugs‘ artwork hangs above an alcove that features 30 decorative lanterns in a range of colourful hues. A guest favourite in the winter months is at the back of the lobby; a cosy lounge area with an essence of a log cabin, complete with swing chairs and comfortable leather seating that surround a mesmerising crackling open fire pit.

The Parker contains five main food and drink destinations, allowing visitors to cool down and fill up around the clock. ‘Normas‘ is the brightly coloured open-air terrace restaurant that serves breakfast in style boasting beautiful views out across the hotel’s private grounds. Vibrant pops of burnt orange upholstery used on the booth seating are accessorised with multi-colour button cushions, adding a striking contrast to the greens of the garden and blues of the sky the restaurant’s terrace frames.

Mister Parker’s‘ puts the fun informal with its dark, discrete and decadent decor. Mirrored ceilings reflect the restaurant’s geometric carpeting and vibrant upholstery in a dizzying array of glamour. The interior’s dark wood-panelled walls showcase an eclectic collection of artworks to entertain and fascinate guests during their visit. The lower ceilings and dark colour palette create an intimate setting, a perfect and romantic getaway for the evening.

Black glossy running bond tiles and an impressive decorative black tin tile ceiling provide a dramatic backdrop to ‘Counter-Reformation‘, a bar described at the ‘shrine to great wine’. The interior draws attention to the bar with decorative red cement tiles with matching weaving on the wooden bar stools. This secretive space also has no tables and chairs, prompting socialising and movement throughout the room, from the guests seated at the bar to the ones ‘ledge-leaning’ on the side.

The ‘Mini Bar‘ is a jewellery box of delight, accessed directly from the lobby. Gold studded blue velvet doors slide back to reveal dark emerald stone-clad, ceilings, walls and floors with inset mirrored accents. The centrepiece is the beautiful line of golden Art Deco bar stools. This small space glistens in golden hues and depicts the ultimate in Hollywood glamour. Heading out into the sunshine, guests can cool down at the ‘Lemonade Stand‘. Located next to the Pétanque court, the Lemonade Stand lures our inner child with its classic yellow and white striped awning and multi-coloured Bertoia barstools. Serving up, you’ve guessed it, lemonade, as well as a range of cocktails, this is an exclusive experience for registered estate guests only.

The nautical-themed spa, ‘Palm Springs Yacht Club‘ continues the eclectic, mid-century style from the hotel but pared-back, opting for a limited colour palette of white, blue and red hues. As one would expect from a spa, there is an immediate essence of calm as visitors walk into the entrance and lobby. Double-height ceilings and metallic wallpaper create an impressive sense of space and grandeur with decorative wall mouldings and trims add to the ‘yacht club’ vibe. The centrepiece is the indoor saltwater pool decorated in uniform nautical stripes. The thick outlines used on the textiles, awnings and drapery is a fascinating and effective touch, creating an almost comic-book-like style that distinguishes itself as a world away from life, an escape and a moment to enjoy one’s self.

For a private escape and time to yourself, Parker’s villas, suites and rooms do not disappoint. As if gallery spaces in themselves, the curation of mid-century antiques and art fill these spaces, providing a home away from home and a style iconic to the Parker brand. The hotel offers eight variations of accommodation with guests having the opportunity of staying at the grand, private gated ‘Gene Autry Residence’ that boasts two bedrooms, two baths, a private treatment room, sauna and a large terrace. The equally beautiful ‘Hammock Rooms‘ are another alternative, offering a private space to relax in the sun, surrounded by gorgeous blooms and manicured gardens. Whatever option one chooses, every meticulous detail ensures that the style and experience of a stay in the world of Parker are unforgettable.

Elizabeth Hotel, The Music Lovers' Dream In Fort Collins
Boutique Hotels, North America & Canada

Elizabeth Hotel, The Music Lovers’ Dream In Fort Collins

Elizabeth Hotel, a 164-room boutique hotel in Colorado, opened in December 2017, on the edge of Old Town Fort Collins. The beautiful project celebrates the local music community with Bohemian Companies – the for-profit sister company of the Bohemian Foundation, which heavily invested in the music and art scene throughout Fort Collins. Having this in mind, the hotel will feature local art from students, professors and musicians, including music that will carry through the building.

The Elizabeth Hotel also pays tribute to “Auntie” Elizabeth Stone, owner of the first hotel in Fort Collins and considered as the city’s “Founding Mother”. She had amazing qualities which made her earn the affectionate nickname of “Auntie” like her delicious cooking, her great sense of humour and generous hospitality. Elizabeth Stone was known for her boundless energy. On her 81st birthday, townspeople and four generations of the Stone family held a dance in her honour at the Masonic Hall. As the music plays a big part in Fort Collins’ nowadays, the Elizabeth Hotel will keep her alive in every melody, from top to bottom every day of the week.

The project was an excitement for the interior design studio DLR Group and the architectural language spoke with soul and history. To help to elevate the personality of the charismatic project, MAYA Armchair from BRABBU was the perfect solution of the juxtaposition of elegance and female energy combined with contemporary style. DLR Group explains their challenge:

  • What was the main inspiration for this project?

Love of music is inherent in the Fort Collins community, and so played an integral role in inspiring our design for The Elizabeth Hotel. One of the cornerstone amenities of the hotel is its lending library where guests can check out musical instruments, equipment, and records. We created spaces that would complement those musical foundations, infusing acoustic design into every part of the hotel to enhance the audible experience.

  •  What is your favourite feature of the whole design?

The entire design feels rooted in the community’s identity. From the artwork that welcomes you as you arrive, to the individual signature suites that each embody a different aspect of Fort Collins’ heritage, I love how we were able to work with the client and our partner firms to create a travel destination that connects locals and visitors to the fabric of the city.

  • In what way did BRABBU’s piece complement the space?

Our design for The Elizabeth Hotel offers a balance of feminine and masculine aesthetics, which was enhanced by our use of the BRABBU piece. The overall feel is one that is both familiar and elegant, and feels handcrafted in every way.

  • What was the biggest creative challenge for you?

We really wanted to make sure that what we were creating felt authentic – that it would give guests a unique experience equal to the uniqueness of the city. We knew how important The Elizabeth Hotel would be to the local community, and we felt a lot of pressure to make sure every design choice would accurately convey the city’s personality. That challenge ultimately produced a design that is as distinctive and inviting as Fort Collins itself.

Architecture by Denver-based 4240 Architecture and interior design by DLR Group balance feminine filigree details, intricate metalwork, and cast-plaster ceiling ornamentation with masculine accents of raw and aged wood. It is filled with local art. The 130 original pieces on display throughout the hotel—curated by Denver-based art advisory firm NINE dot ARTS—celebrate music, nature, and local artists, especially those with a connection to Colorado State University. Nearly four dozen of the artworks displayed in the hotel’s guest rooms and public spaces were produced by a CSU alumnus or professor.
