Valentine’s Day is a weekend affair this year and with President’s Day in the United States on the following Monday, many couples will be traveling for the long weekend.
Luxury hotels are looking to accommodate guests’ short trips for the holiday with different packages, menus and special events within their properties. Taking advantage of a dual holiday weekend with interesting guest options will likely allow hotel brands to create a relationship with couples at one location that may carry over to other properties during future trips.
Couples taking the extended weekend, or even just the night, to be away from home and indulge in hotel offerings are looking for a relaxing and romantic experience. The experiences created allow guests to temporarily escape from their daily lives with their significant other.

On Valentine’s Day, couples are actively seeking a truly special experience – and what could be more special than a romantic visit to a legendary resort?
At the Ritz-Carlton San Francisco, the in-house restaurant features a menu that includes a five course tasting menu and wine pairing options. This special typically attracts local residents looking for a special evening.
Other experiences include room packages like at the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong where guests will be welcomed with Champagne and chocolates and hotel credit to the restaurants on the property.
At the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach, United Arab Emirates, couples can choose from several options including the “Only You” package that includes exclusive access to the day villas, chauffeured service in a Mercedes-Benz or Bentley, Champagne and dinner with chocolate dessert as an opera singer performs.
The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas appeals to local island vibes with a sailing option on a 53-foot catamaran that sails at sunset as couples sip Champagne. Guests can also spend their days at the hotel in a seaside cabana receiving a massage or other spa treatments.
Waldorf Astoria’s Arizona Biltmore is focusing on food for the weekend with two restaurant dinner options, an in-room dinner service, a brunch and an afternoon tea option for guests.
New York’s The Mark Hotel is calling on lovebirds this Valentine’s Day with several meals and relaxing options for couples.
Chef of The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges, Jacques Grange will indulge guests in a breakfast, and after aroma relaxation and bubble baths, couples will be treated to a five course meal. The Mark Hotel will likely intrigue local guests to treat themselves and their significant others to a relaxing staycation.
In addition, The Peninsula Hotels is sending its own Cupid around Hong Kong this Valentine’s Day to locally spread love. A Mini Cooper is traveling throughout the city with red heart balloons encouraging Hong Kong locals to snap photos with the vehicle and share their love story on social media. Local events help hotels form relationships with neighbors likely creating a trust that will translate over to vacations.
Few places ooze more classic Parisian cachet than the Hôtel Vernet, occupying an ornate belle epoque town house just a croissant’s throw from the Champs-Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe. Gustave Eiffel himself contributed the marquee attraction, the glass-and-iron roof above the restaurant, originally a dance hall. So when François Champsaur’s namesake firm was hired by the new owner, Bessé Signature, to oversee a full renovation of the 50-room property for its 100th birthday, he received one clear directive: Do something Parisian.
For Champsaur, chosen over the arguably more boldfaced Philippe Starck and Pierre-Yves Rochon, the first step was simply to highlight the most compelling details. That meant not just the restaurant roof but also the checkerboard marble floor, the sweeping spiral staircase, and the elevator with its wrought-iron cage. Then Champsaur faced the key question: What, exactly, constitutes a new Parisian interior?
Champsaur said that Paris “is about the skills of our individual craftspeople, the furniture-makers, the woodworkers, the people who work with fabrics.” The emphasis on creative traditions makes particular sense because the city has recently undergone “a renaissance of creativity,” he adds. “There are lots of artists, artisans, designers, and architects now. We need to incorporate this movement and show how Paris has evolved.”
He custom-designed much of the Hôtel Vernet’s furniture, which was in turn executed by local ateliers. His dedication to natural materials, especially stone and wood, melds with imaginative free-form shapes and patterns—almost nothing looks like it rolled off an assembly line or was plucked from a showroom. With his personality-rich furniture, one-off decorative details, and unexpected color juxtapositions, the striking overall result complements the eclectic work by contemporary French artists displayed throughout the hotel.

The redone restaurant, named the V, sets the tone. To update the vibe beneath Eiffel’s glass roof, from dance hall to living room, Champsaur covered the walls above the long curved banquettes with abstract paintings, prints, drawings, gouaches, and sketches. Original artwork is an essential component of every hospitality project he tackles. “For hotels, design is insufficient,” he says. “You need to bring in poetry, invention, imagination, not just tables and lamps.”
Because the glass roof admits too much sun glare, he absorbed it with a rug that’s largely black. It’s punctuated with blue and beige twig shapes, intended as a modern-day answer to the belle epoque floral patterns painted on the glass. This interplay between overhead and underfoot is another central component of Champsaur’s design. “We took an antique motif and fragmented it, making it more contemporary,” he explains. In the dialogue between past and present, each era highlights the other.
Multiple dialogues unfold in the adjacent lounge, where Champsaur’s vision of art and artisanship is most fully realized. To counterbalance an original mantelpiece in marble and brass, he placed a tall copper screen, pleated vertically like an unfolded piece of paper, at the opposite end of the room. In front of the screen stands a marble bar with an amoeboid form recalling one of his favorite modern masters, Jean Arp.
Even more impressive are the lounge’s contributions from a living artist, Jean-Michel Alberola. On the ceiling, Alberola painted a universe of unusual geometric forms, mostly black or white, floating against a pale gold background that echoes the room’s brass and copper elements. It’s a return to the venerable artistic tradition of artworks as part of the fabric of buildings. “Like the Sistine Chapel,” Champsaur says. For the floor, Alberola designed a rug with blobs and splotches of blue, purple, red, and orange floating on a gray ground. The parallel surfaces seem to respond to each other.
Since period details had disappeared from the guest rooms, Champsaur invented era-appropriate crown moldings and specified sink fittings in unfinished brass that will develop a natural patina as they age. French oak plays a lead role in the form of floor planks, tall headboards, and wall-size sliding doors. His desktops combine blocks of color in a manner suggestive of Piet Mondrian, another favorite. Above each desk hangs a mirror dreamed up by Alberola, the roughly round shape evoking a child’s attempts at paper cutouts. Looking into the glass, guests merge with the artwork and the room simultaneously, creating the ultimate dialogues: beholder with beheld, individual with environment.
The theme of the moment is the premiere of the movie Fifty Shades of Grey. If you’ve read this enchanting love story, you know that the Heathman Hotel plays a leading role, if you haven’t opened the cover of this novel yet, let us enlighten you!
Ms. Steele and Mr. Grey frequent the Heathman, not only for their well versed and scandalizing room suite scenes, but also for refreshments in the bar and an exquisite dining experience in our private restaurant space. Well, and then there is the elevator as well, a site of many a seductive word interchanged between these two.
We have embraced this phenomenon and encourage those that are 50 Shades fans, to experience a bit of the story during their visit. Heathman bartender Kathy Casey has created the delicious “50 Shades” cocktail. This cocktail features gin, fresh tangerine, pomegranate juice, lemon, and fresh thyme; it is available in the bar and restaurant.
We also found two offerings awaiting your touch discretely tied up. The first is Inner Goddess Add-On package which includes a chilled bottle of Boedecker Pinot Gris, shared by the main characters in the first novel, and a keepsake grey neck tie. The second is a $2,750 “Charlie Tango No Limits” package which includes far more: Appetizers and white wine at the hotel restaurant for six people, a helicopter tour of the city, roses for the ladies in the party, dinner at the hotel and limo transfers to the helipad.

The 60’s swing on at the newly redesigned Miami Beach Edition, formerly Seville Beach Hotel, thanks to international design firm Yabu Pushelberg who preserved architectural details from the original building while mellowing the frenetic vibe of the era, and área.
Despite the clever choice to host an exclusive grand opening party in the midst of the Art Basel bacchanal, Yabu Pushelberg designed the interior of the Establishment, the rooms and suites especially, with refined quietude in mind. Natural fibers and neutral tones abound which speak of the sandy beaches below, and bring an overall lightness to the space. The room design is pared-down and simple with clean lines and clear surfaces, while still offering plush Comfort.

The Matador Bar tips it’s hat to Miami’s see and be seen party scene with a large open oval layout and cozy sprawling couches along the walls for a perfect view of the room from any seat. Highly saturated photos of (you guessed it) matadors hung salon style throughout the bar infuse the space with a 60’s technicolor vibe, which is softened and refined by lovely dark walnut floors and cove lighting.
Other original elements found throughout the building include gilt mosaic-tiled columns and a white and black stone floor in the lobby which Yabu Pushelberg juxtaposed against soft natural materials used in the lounge area, as well as the original radial sundeck, a staple of the beach resort, dotted with ample linen daybeds and copious arrays of pillows. The original curvilinear pool was also preserved, counter-balanced by a new rectangular pool both surrounded by lounge chairs and private cabanas in what is Miami’s largest poolside experiences. The rest of the grounds offer multitudes of games and diversions including a bowling alley, and ice rink, and of course, a night club.
The Edition Hotel is successful combination of retro and ultra modern design. Yabu Pushelberg simply and assertively wove neutral colors and natural materials throughout the more bold existing elements of the hotel, creating an easy balance between a refined modern luxury, and the brash and playful elements that define Miami Beach culture.
