Aman Canal Grande, Venice, Italy – By Denniston

European Hotel Design Awards

European Hotel Design Awards

In June 2013, Denniston completed the bathroom and the hotel bedroom design on the Aman Canal Grande in Venice. Incorporating a contemporary hotel chandeliers and contemporary hotel furniture of the 16th and 18th centuries one of Denniston’s biggest problems was to create the ‘mechanicals and electricals’ in the most discrete way possible. This mix with modern classic hotel design, gave Denniston a nomination for this award.

“I always try to make it comfortable to watch the television from the bed or a comfortable chair, there is always a good reading light by a comfortable chair, a really good desk that you can work at and plug in what you need to, and an end of bed footstool to put on your shoes. I want people to feel good when they stay with us.” says Kit when she remembers her work on the Ham Yard Hotel in London. With a magical way of making a collection of colors mix and bringing a room to life, Kim has outdone herself and we can say this is her mark as an interior designer.

Luxury hotel decor: black chandeliers

Luxury hotel decor: black chandeliers – For a perfect hotel interior design, black chandeliers are always well. An hotel is an imposing place and that is why it needs a large chandelier because hotel pendant lighting is the best choice when it comes to choose something big. There are so many modern chandeliers but we choose the hotels with a black chandelier on the lobby, the restaurant or even on the library bar. We found perfect solutions and great inspiring images with only one result: a unique lighting with contemporary hotel chandeliers was the order in those cases. Black is always black, don’t you agree?

Designer lighting is always so sophisticated and imposing that it is perfect for an hotel. Take a look at those images, there are amazing ambiances to inspire you! Enjoy it and get inspired, I have a feeling that you will love the ideas!

The Peninsula Shanghai

Top 5 business hotels in the world

A master of luxe hospitality, Peninsula Hotels chairman Michael Kadoorie spent his childhood in Shanghai. So the March 2010 premiere of his ninth property, the Peninsula Shanghai, was a homecoming of sorts. On a stretch of the historic Bund, the10-story granite-clad building is a Modernist reflection of its Art Deco–era neighbors, the Shanghai Club and Sassoon House. Architect David Beer and interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon delivered gleaming brass- and-mahogany elevators and 235 guest rooms that combine embossed glass lamps and black-lacquer screens with 21st-century amenities. All come with VoIP phones, portable master control panels, and spa tubs with music and light settings. But your most valuable asset here is savvy chief concierge Simon Huang, who may very well be the best in town.

Four Seasons Hotel Mexico, D.F.

Top 5 business hotels in the world

Only a world-class hotel like the Four Seasons could make Mexico City, a hectic metropolis of 21 million, feel relaxing. Its colonial-hacienda architecture, Mexican gardens (with tropical-fruit trees, orchids, and chirping caged canaries), courtyard dining, and proximity to verdant Chapultepec Park represent an oasis of calm amid the bustle of the capital. The 240 spacious guestrooms also promote tranquility with a neutral palette of taupes and creams, deep soaking tubs, and views of elegant Paseo de la Reforma or the quiet courtyard. In keeping with Four Seasons culture, the large staff is warm, genuinely helpful, and utterly unflappable. The in-house Galería Lourdes Sosa has a rotating collection of Mexican art, including paintings by Jose Luis Cuevas.

Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong

Top 5 business hotels in the world

Brand new in 2005, this 399-room waterfront property has a gargantuan, decadent spa (try a Chinese Wellness Ritual, which begins with a tea ceremony and includes a scrub and a massage), and spacious rooms and suites (the smallest of which are about 500 square feet). Room design tends toward clean-lined, modern minimalism, with Asian-infused touches like lacquered-wood tables and silk cushions and throws. All have 42-inch plasma-screen TV’s, and luxurious bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads. Of the on-site dining options, two are excellent: Lung King Heen, a three-Michelin-star restaurant serving innovative Cantonese cuisine, and French eatery Caprice, which has two Michelin stars. Though the property’s real showstopper is the rooftop deck, where twin swimming pools overlook the harbor.

The Peninsula, Tokyo

Top 5 business hotels in the world

With a prime location on a corner facing the Imperial Palace and Hibiya Park, and within walking distance of Ginza and the newly named “Golden Triangle” (Hibiya, Marunouchi, and Yurakucho), The Peninsula Tokyo wowed travelers when it opened September 2007, book-ending the city’s hotel boom. Its tower houses 314 spacious rooms, including 47 luxurious hotel suites, each with stone accents, warm woodwork, and Japanese lacquer touches—as well as high-tech touch lighting and Lavazza espresso machines. In a city that is notoriously difficult to navigate, the concierge staff here is especially skilled, able to score tables at Michelin-ranked restaurants or find bilingual guides to navigate you through the boisterous Tsukiji Fish Market. Dining in? The atmospheric Hei Fung Terrace restaurant serves exceptional authentic Cantonese food.

The Stafford London

Top 5 business hotels in the world

With three very distinct buildings, this refined property offers something for everyone: the main house, fresh from a renovation, features tastefully appointed rooms with a traditional decor; rooms in the Carriage House have a country flair; and Stafford Mews houses modern suites that sprawl over seemingly endless square feet. There’s also plenty of choice at the newly launched Lyttelton restaurant, which focuses on rustic, British cuisine, such as summer truffle pappardelle and wild sea bass with heirloom tomatoes. At the American bar, more than 3,000 memorabilia items (knick-knacks, photographs, airplane models, ties) hang from the walls, and the in-house wine cellar specializes in Burgundy and Bordeaux.

Top 10 Casino Hotels in Las Vegas

Casino hotels dominate the Las Vegas skyline and inside they are just as jaw-dropping, with theatres, clubs, art, restaurants, malls and even the odd gondola ride. So, I will present you the top 10 casino hotels in Las Vegas, real luxury hotels.

Red Rock Resort

Off the Strip by several miles and closer to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Red Rock Casino Resort is a property of Station Casinos, which made its mark in Vegas by appealing to those who actually live there. But Red Rock is as fancy and decadent as any on the Strip, with a masculine design of crimson and burnt orange and a chain of more than 3.1m Swarovski and Preciosa crystals (measuring 99 miles) hanging throughout the resort. During the summer, Red Rock opened a 7,000-seat outdoor amphitheatre, and its pool concert series is one of the most popular of its kind in the city.

Public art is heavily featured: guests at reception are met with artist Maya Lin’s Silver River sculpture. Bellagio

One of the big “wow” events in recent Vegas history was the opening of Bellagio, which ushered in the era of the “mega-resort” in October 1998. The splashy Fountains at Bellagio water show at the front of the hotel, envisioned by hotel founder Steve Wynn, continues to halt traffic on the Strip. Inside, the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens change with the seasons. Looming at the registration desk is a glass sculpture designed by the artist Dale Chihuly. The resort is home to the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art, also a Wynn vision. In the 40-table poker room hangs a painting by LeRoy Neiman, titled simply (and appropriately) The Game.

Wynn Encore

Encore opened as a twin to the equally giant Wynn in late-2008, and the two properties represent Steve Wynn’s greatest hits: fantastic restaurants, an interior design of canopies and coffered ceilings that bring to mind the effects of Bellagio. Upon opening, the resort threw a stack of cash and the use of a private jet to country music superstar Garth Brooks, booking his one-man show in the theatre next to Le Rêve. Appropriately, those shows meet in the middle of these hotels. For outdoor entertainment, try the Encore Beach Club, which sits nearly atop the Strip and is one of the finest pool clubs in town.

Gondoliers steer you through the Venetian, welcoming guests to the waterway that cuts through a replica of St Mark’s Square. Strolling performers sing operatic tunes, and it is all played out in a winding, pedestrian retail centre known as the Grand Canal Shops. The Venetian opened in May 1999, followed in 2007 by the Palazzo next door. Some of the city’s great shows and restaurants are here: Jersey Boys, Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular and the Blue Man Group. Lagasse’s Stadium at Palazzo is one of the city’s finest sports books, the only place in the city where you can find a man watching sport in the jersey of his favourite team, shouting at a big screen and devouring a banana creme pie dessert conceived by Lagasse himself.

Caesars Palace

Caesars opened in 1966, has been known as one of the last standing haunts of the Rat Pack, the site of some of the greatest prizefights in history, and the spot where daredevil Evel Knievel went tea-over-teakettle in a 1967 motorcycle leap. These days, the stars are Celine Dion, Elton John and Rod Stewart. All take the stage at various times at the 4,100-seat Colosseum. Another popular show is Absinthe, held in a big white tent in the hotel’s Roman Plaza, near its entrance. One of the city’s first Strip retail centres, the Forum Shops, remains an ideal place to fling your credit card or put that blackjack hot streak to good use.

Cosmopolitan

If the Mirage launched the mega-resort era in Vegas, the Cosmopolitan seems to be its bookend. Built next to CityCenter, the resort stacks 2,995 rooms – the majority of which offer terraces and views of the Strip. Tucked into the Marquee nightclub, a three-storey party space, is an enclave known as the Library, where guests shoot pool and read Vegas-centric books, The signature gathering spot is the Chandelier bar, a bedazzled, multi-decked haven of hobnobbing. A pizzeria called, simply, Pizzeria, sits down an unmarked hallway, giving the impression you sort of have to know somebody to find the place. The concert and party centre, Boulevard Pool, is positioned high above the Strip.

Mandarin Oriental

Perhaps the coolest floor in all of Vegas is the 23rd at the Mandarin Oriental, where the Mandarin Bar overlooks the Strip on one end and Pierre Gagnaire’s Twist looks out from the other. This is a non-gaming hotel, it has no grand theatre or any sort of resident production show or headliner. But it is one chic spot, with live jazz playing from the Mandarin Bar and visitors reclining in the lounge next to the reception. Yes, that is on the 23rd floor, too, a spot called the Sky Lobby. The hotel provides one of the great escapes in Las Vegas, a 27,000sqft spa with 17 treatment rooms.

Mandalay Bay

Laden with deeply coloured floor tiling in its valet entrance and a uniquely curious fragrance that hints at citrus, Mandalay Bay is a genuine mega-resort with 3,300 rooms, and filled with an array of entertainment venues. The 12,000-seat Mandalay Bay Events Center hosts boxing and mixed-martial arts events, the House of Blues features emerging and contemporary pop acts. Upstairs two venues provide terrific views of the Strip: the cozy, pop art-laden Foundation Room and MIX restaurant and nightclub. Shark Reef, the watery walking park filled with sharks and other exotic, aquatic creatures, is the quintessential fun-for-the-entire-family attraction.

Mirage

The Mirage can often be overlooked these days, as more gargantuan resorts have sprouted since it’s breathtaking opening in 1989. Siegfried & Roy once performed here, and these days the Beatles (with the Cirque du Soleil production Love) and a master ventriloquist (theatre headliner Terry Fator) rule the entertainment scene. Inside, the casino floor is shrouded in tropical surroundings. Guests walk through a glass atrium that lets the sun shine in, hearing the soothing sounds of a waterfall over the action at the casino. Mirage has been upgraded to keep pace with its taller competition, and is still one of the city’s major players on the Strip.

European Hotel Design Awards winner 2014 - Suites at Aman Canal Grande

Throughout the 24 suites of Aman Canal Grande, every suite has its own size, location and identity and history. Some of these have been designed over centuries by extravagant architects and have a very strong identity in terms of existing architecture decoration.

European Hotel Design Awards winner 2014 - Suites at Aman Canal Grande

The decision to go with the contemporary interior design style was the only relevant choice to gain success. We treated the suite in the lightest and most delicate manner to bring some freshness to this historically heavy environment. Using pure lines combined with few colour tones in addition to working with only the finest materials and finishes was intentional.

Palazzo Versace Luxury Hotel, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

The Palazzo Versace, meaning Versace Palace, is a luxury hotel located on the Southport Spit at Main Beach on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Soheil Abedian of the Sunland Group visited the House of Versace in 1997 to propose the idea of a Versace branded hotel. He claims Palazzo Versace Gold Coast to be the first fashion-branded hotel. On his reasons for approaching Versace, Abedian says “Gianni Versace was a lover of architecture in the first place, a person who used in his fashion all the elements of the Baroque style. Also, Versace was the only fashion house at the time that had a home collection and everything that a hotel needed from the porcelain to cutlery, pillows to fabric.” The main building was designed by chief architect Rocco Magnoli in Postmodern architecture style in a broad interpretation of Neoclassical architecture. In September 2000, Palazzo Versace opened its doors and created a new luxury address on a historic site in Southern Queensland on the edge of the Gold Coast Broad water.

Palazzo Versace is inspired by the opulent palaces of Europe and the classic architecture of Roman times. Versace gave the hotel design his magic touch: its driveway is the second largest pebble mosaic in the world; the foyer’s chandelier was imported from the State Library of Milan; and there’s more than $11.5 million worth of Italian-imported marble. The hotel on Queensland’s Gold Coast features 200 rooms and suites, all decked out in Versace homeware and accessories, such as a private bar featuring Versace crystal and coffee-making facility comprising Versace china. Additionally, there’s private butler service for all rooms, three restaurants, five pools, a manmade beach, a spa (Aurora, one of Australia’s largest) and, as you would imagine, a Versace boutique. Don’t ever want to leave? Visitors can buy one of the 72 luxury condominiums.

London’s art deco jewel – Claridge’s Hotel

At the heart of London’s Mayfair, Claridge’s luxury hotel is perfectly situated for the West End, stylish shopping districts, leafy Royal parks and thriving business centres. The timeless glamour of Claridge’s is the result of more than a century of collaboration with some of the world’s most respected and influential designers.

Amazing Boutique Hotels and suites by top Fashion Designers 9

The hotel’s original plan was developed by CW Stephens, the architect responsible for Harrods. Claridge’s art deco transformation took place in the 1920s and 30s. Created in one of the most exciting eras of design – the art deco period, in Claridge’s Harrods architect mixed the natural forms of Art Nouveau with modern influences of Cubism and Futurism. The bold lines and sweeping curves of the style give Claridge’s its unmistakable air of timeless elegance. Claridge’s invited art deco pioneer Basil Lonides to re-design the restaurant and several suites. His magnificent engraved glass screens still adorn the restaurant today. By 1929 the hotel was a world-renowned showcase for top British designers. Oswald Milne designed a new main entrance, removing the original awkward carriage drive. A façade of Roman stone and jazz moderne mirrored foyer completed Claridge’s new look.  The grand success of the art deco redesign inspired a much larger project. In the early 1930s Milne added an extension to the east side of Claridge’s. With its simple cubic outline, the tall brick block stands in both contrast and harmony with the main hotel building. Inside, Milne created a fine suite of reception rooms and guestrooms furnished with smart, eclectic style. The additions were widely praised in the press.  In 1996, Claridge’s embarked on a major design restoration. Inspired by archive photographs from the 1930s, New York-based designer Thierry Despont made over the Foyer area in modern art deco style. The centrepiece of the space is a stunning, up-to-the minute Dale Chihuly chandelier. David Collins was invited to create the new Claridge’s Bar, while Thierry Despont went on to create Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s. Claridge’s entered the 21st century in a dramatically modern art deco style.

Claridge’s continued to innovate over the past decated resulting in the rooftop apartments that were redeveloped in the early 1990s by Veere Grenney. A series of collaborations with David Collins and Thierry Despont added flourishes to the Claridge’s Bar, the restaurant and several suites in the 1990s. Twenty rooms and suites launched in 2010 were the first interiors projects in the distinguished career of Diane von Furstenberg. The Ballroom, French Salon and Drawing Rooms were restored by noted architect Guy Oliver – our consultant for over 20 years. He has preserved the original features, while applying the very latest technologies. In 2012, we completed 25 suites that bear the name of David Linley, one of Britain’s most respected designers and craftsmen. The results combine glorious Victorian and glamorous art deco design with modern flourishes.

Concept Hotel Maison Moschino

Maison Moschino is a unique boutique hotel in Milan! Designer-inspired hotel have been established in 2010. Maison Moschino Milan is a 65-room hotel inside a 1840s Neo-classical railway station. Just like the brand’s whimsical, haute-couture designs, the hotel is all about fairy tales and fanciful fantasy. Once you enter, you’re greeted by puffy-cloud light fixtures, white lamb chair and lit gowns. Not one room is alike, and the design comes straight from surreal, avant-garde dreams: tree branches serve as bedposts, vines climb across a striped wall and a red gown constitutes a headboard. The Little Red Riding Hood Room has a patterned and stuffed wolf awaiting, while Alice’s Room beckons with a giant coffee cup in a twisted reality. Creativity here is an understatement.

Want to surprise your client with unusual chandelier? Take a glance to these ones form brand Delightfull. The golden rule of good lighting design is to use the right type of light fitting in the right position. A good rule of thumb is to question the function of every fitting. I have a pleasure to present you five of the most prominent hotel projects, designed by Kelly Wearstler, Pierre Yves Rochon, Alberto Pinto, Hirsch Bedner and Yabu Pushelberg.

Hotels are one of the oldest symbols of luxury, so much so that Coco Chanel famously chose The Paris Ritz as her home for over thirty years. In the accessible age of luxury e-commerce and iPad applications, hotels have survived and prospered in remaining truly exclusive experiences, the quintessential definition of luxury.

The Palm Beach in the Canary Islands by Alberto Pinto

Borrowing from various cultural influences from his earliest childhood, Alberto Pinto, an inescapable actor of interior design, has built his works on the interbreeding and mixture of genders from more than baroque to less than bare. The Palm Beach in the Canary Islands is one of his projects.

Today, I have a look at collaborations between fashion designers and luxury hotels, from Tiffany’s Suite in St.Regis, New York to Dior suite in Hotel Majestic Barriere, Cannes.

Have you noticed that when a fashion designer takes on the role of hotel designer, you really don’t know exactly what you’re gonna get? Once the initial hotel of a fashion house opens, we can then look for signature details or some visibly explainable transition from, say, a three-piece suit to a three-room suite. So, all commercial architects and interior designers – get inspired by glamorous fashion designers hotel projects worldwide! I also will suggest some ideas for your suite interior design project.

Diane von Furstenberg suites in Claridge’s, London

The Grand Piano Suite in Claridge’s is a favourite of Diane von Furstenberg – unsurprising considering she designed it’s luxury interior. When she wasn’t hanging out in her New York pad, this was where famous fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg stayed in London for more than 40 years. Following a complete renovation in 2010, the famous Claridge’s hotel in London now boasts 20 suites designed by this lady who is known as the “Queen of prints”. Decorated with personal touches including cashmere blankets, wallpaper, fabrics with her iconic prints, and even photos that the stylist has taken during her travels, the comfortable and contemporary hotel suites, make you feel right at home, just like Diane. A night in one of the suites in Claridge’s will cost you from 419 euro.

Dior suite in Hotel Majestic Barriere, Cannes

Another luxury interior design project is suite Dior. Inspired by the designer’s Paris headquarters and features various subtle references to the fashion house as well as impressive Bil Donovan illustrations of vintage Dior designs. Dior suite is a kingdom of pure luxury- light and dark stone floors, Chevron hardwood floors (as in Haussman architecture flats in Paris), a gallery leading to a dining room with a large, refined, imposing table in the centre surrounded by medallion chairs covered in grey fabric and silver seams. Attention is drawn to a detail in the lounge: the bright red cushions on the sofa, which is exactly the same colour as the cushions designed by Christian Dior in 1947. The matching rooms give the impression of ever returning seasons because grey is the colour of expectation, which gets lighter day by day. This grey was one of the charms of Monsieur Christian. Majestic Barrière wanted it, the House of Dior made it possible.

Christian Lacroix rooms in the Notre Dame Hotel, Paris

Hotel du Petit Moulin in Paris has been designed exclusively by Christian Lacroix, who transformed a 17th-century building into what its owners claim is “a true couture hotel”. In practice this means that each room is different. The unique Notre Dame hotel, boasting amazing views of the Notre Dame in Paris, has 26 luxury suites all designed by controversial designer Christian Lacroix. True to his style, the rooms boast contemporary décor with Baroque influences. The building itself is more than 400 years old and has been totally refurbished inside. A combination of materials was used in the interior design including velvet, leather, carpets and marble, etc. Here you will find a hotel with quite a medieval and elaborate look, very typical of Lacroix. The Notre Dame Hotel doesn’t have a restaurant however, there is a lounge bar and breakfast service to the rooms is on offer.

Bentley Suite at St. Regis Hotel, New York City

St. Regis Hotel – some of the priciest real estate in the world are just perfect place for luxury interior design project for Bentley. The classic Speed Six outside led to a new launch inside: the Bentley Suite at the St. Regis, the luxury marque’s first “branded experience” in a hotel room. Renting for a substantial $9,500 per night, the 15th-floor corner suite is meant to introduce St. Regis guests to the craftsmanship, materials, luxury, and style that Bentley embodies.

And while neither the hotel nor Daniele Ceccomori, the suite’s designer, will say for sure, it may conceivably be the first of several such Bentley Suites in St. Regis hotels worldwide. The suite also comes with access to the 2013 St. Regis Bentley Mulsanne commissioned by the hotel with a bottle cooler and crystal champagne flutes, St. Regis crests on the headrests and personalised tread plates–though only within a 10-block radius, apparently. Entering the 1,700-square-foot suite, the first thing you notice is the lovely smell of leather–which in the foyer is laid in a herringbone pattern on the floor.

Top 5 Fashion Designers- Luxury hotel interior design projects 18

Ceccomori noted that it was a tougher grade of hide than Bentley uses for its interior leather, for durability, but that it would acquire scuffs and marks over time, “like a classic car.” On the foyer table, an overscale chrome model of the Flying-B hood ornament is mounted on an oblong plinth, resembling on first glance an ornate old-style flat iron. Behind it is a round mirror and a diamond-quilted leather wall in a pale beige color with its stitching in Living Green, one of a few new interior accent colors Bentley Motors plans to introduce in future vehicles. The bedroom has side cabinets inspired by the fold-out cupboards in the back of Bentley’s XP9 F sport-utility concept, with two walls that retain the old-world St. Regis plaster details and two in contracting shades that blend Bentley materials, colors, and textures.

Top 5 Fashion Designers- Luxury hotel interior design projects 19

Top 5 Fashion Designers- Luxury hotel interior design projects 20In general, the suite interior design project is quiet and masculine in tone, with dark browns, greys, cream, and ivory colors, large-scale but not ponderous furniture, and many playful touches that are meant to indicate an evolution of the Bentley esthetic. Curtains are edged in seat-belt webbing, for instance, and glossy white barrel side tables open to reveal orange interiors for an unexpected splash of color. Trim and furniture materials include a variety of fine woods, leathers, woven fabrics, and stainless steel. The living room has a seating area, a sideboard, and a desk with floating drawers, though we noted–sadly–a typo on the quotation woven into the leather writing pad. The flexible dining-room space can double as a conference room, with a large flat-screen display hidden behind buff-colored square-paneled doors. Analog Breitling clocks over the screen show the times in New York, London, Moscow, and Riyadh. And overhead, a chandelier of three rings angled in layers contains hundreds of white LEDs illuminating rectangular crystals, alluding to the LEDs in a Bentley’s running lights.

The one and half bathrooms of the Bentley Suite are still standard-issue St. Regis. Marque touches to those rooms will come in a later phase, he noted. The suite’s artworks mix images and artifacts from the classic Bentley racing period–the late 1920s and early 1930’s among furniture that has some muted Art Deco allusions.

Top 10 Urban Hotels 2014

It is no hyperbole to state that we are the most well travelled generation in history. So much so that it’s no longer uncommon to jump on a transatlantic flight from Paris to New York for a weekend break. Some might even fly from Singapore to Melbourne for dinner.

This unprecedented level of jet-setting poses its own unique challenges, with hotels – particularly those in urban centres – vying for differentiation, scrambling to make a play for that prized check-in. Business centres and mediocre gym facilities are now banned. In their place, says Maria Kuhn, vice president of public relations at Kempinski, are wiretap blockers and personalised fitness programmes. Convenience is a priority, with location transport access, check-in process, intuitive electronic connections and a whip smart concierge topping the list.

Thompson, Chicago, US

Thompson Chicago 1

Located in Chicago’s Gold Coast District, Thompson is a luxury hotel in Chicago. It is the 11th addition to the brand’s expanding hotel portfolio. Interiors are by British designer Tara Bernerd, who was also responsible for the brand’s London property, Belgraves, and she has ensured they complement the industrial setting of the existing building, introducing a bold autumnal colour palette in petrol blues, blacks and deep reds, with luxurious finishings in rich velvet materials.

The structure also contains the opulent Artists Theatre, which the hotel has preserved for use as an event space.

The Ludlow is another hotel in the hospitality portfolio of Sean MacPherson and BD Hotels (see the Marlton Hotel next), though it’s their first in the city’s Lower East Side. Once a derelict building abandoned in the 1980s by its original developers after the financial crash, MacPherson saw potential in its solid red brick façade and factory casement windows and rescued it, transforming it with steel and glass doors, marble mosaic floors and a grand limestone fireplace in the lobby. The ground floor entrance leads straight through to a rear courtyard, a rare amenity in Manhattan.

The Temple Hotel Beijing, China

The Temple Hotel Beijing, China 6

Tucked away in the tightly packed streets surrounding the Forbidden City, The Temple Hotel’s evocative past as a Qing dynasty temple is in stark contrast with the contemporary design and renovation that was recently recognised with a UNESCO award for cultural heritage conservation. Original wood and tiles were used throughout the restoration, and a contemporary lighting element was introduced by Ingo Maurer.

Okko Hotel, Nantes, France

Okko Hotel, Nantes, France 8

Created by Olivier Devys with the support of Paul Dubrule, OKKO HOTELS renews the codes of the traditional business hotel by proposing a concept of all inclusive urban hotels where the human being, the design and the innovation are in the heart of the project. This idea is to eschew the traditional hotel attributes – there is no reception desk, no breakfast room, no lounge, just one living space, the Club, which is staffed 24/7. A kitchen offers snacks and refreshments throughout the day, and a business corner houses two computers and a printer. Selected items are on sale in an in-house shop, and a curated selection of newspapers, books and magazines are available.
