1. Katikies, Santorini, Greece
Built in the traditional Cycladic style, with white-clay walls and a maze of staircases, wood bridges, and terraces, this picturesque Greek resort sits atop a cliff overlooking an extinct volcanic caldera. Despite its intimate size, the 27-room boutique property actually boasts two pools—a small cold-water option inside a cave, as well an extraordinary cobalt blue infinity pool featuring sweeping views of the azure waters of the Aegean Sea.
2. Amangiri, Canyon Point, Utah
Tucked within a remote valley in the middle of the Four Corners—the area of the Southwest where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona all meet—the three-year-old Amangiri resort was designed to blend seamlessly into its breathtaking desert surroundings. Perhaps the most impressive is the extraordinary swimming pool—built around a massive, 165-million-year-old Entrada sandstone rock escarpment, it snakes through the rugged terrain and is surrounded by luxurious king-size daybeds.

3. Ubud Hanging Gardens, Bali, Indonesia
Perched on a steep embankment next to terraced rice fields that overlook the lush Ayung river gorge, this Orient-Express hotel consists of 38 Balinese-style villas that appear to float down the hillside. Just as dramatic is its split-level infinity pool, designed by the French architect Gordon Shaw. Lined with Batu Chandi volcanic stone and consisting of geometric walls of solidified volcanic ash, the striking bi-level pool is suspended over a dense rainforest, with an undulating shape that echoes the surrounding terrain.
4. Qasr Al Sarab Resort by Anantara, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Water is a recurring theme throughout this sprawling 206-room desert resort, from the terra-cotta jars outside the entrance (traditionally provided by locals for travelers to quench their thirst) to the tranquil stream running through the arid grounds. Not surprisingly, then, the swirling free-form pool is one of the hotel’s defining features – set among towering palm trees and otherworldly sand dunes, it is a true oasis.
5. Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, Cap d’Antibes, France
For more than 140 years, this illustrious hotel – built in 1870 by Hippolyte de Villemessant, founder of the newspaper Le Figaro – has been a legendary playground for international royalty, politicians, artists, movie stars, and the literary elite. It wasn’t until 1914, however, that the property added a saltwater pool, carved out of basalt rock and overlooking the Lérins Islands and the Mediterranean Sea. Surrounded by a massive sundeck and Art Deco–style railings that resemble those on cruise ships, the pool’s saltwater is heated to a balmy 82.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
6. Playa Vik José Ignacio, José Ignacio, Urugay
This stunning, 19-room boutique hotel is renowned for its low-slung sculptural design, created by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott in 2010. The 75-foot lap pool is made of indigenous black absolute nero granite, and cantilevers out over the beach below. At night, the pool’s bottom is illuminated by a fiber-optic system that displays the celestial map of the southern hemisphere, which plays along the water’s surface like hundreds of twinkling stars.
7. One&Only Reethi Rah, North Male Atoll, Maldives
Set on a private island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, this tropical paradise, which opened in 2005, consists of 130 intimate villas scattered across white-sand beaches and lushly landscaped grounds. The property showcases more than 50 different pools, including a gorgeous, adults-only lap pool that extends over 100 feet into the crystal-clear waters of a lagoon. Its carved-stone bed is the perfect place to relax and bask in the sun.
8. Wildflower Hall, Shimla, India
Set within a dense cedar forest in the middle of the majestic Himalayas, the elegant 85-room Oberoi Resort soars 8,250 feet above sea level, with awe-inspiring views to match. One of the most exquisite spots on the 22-acre property is the ornate indoor swimming pool, with intricate blue mosaic tilework and crystal chandeliers hanging overhead. A glass conservatory and elegant, arched picture windows look out over the snowcapped mountaintops.
9. Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
Located on the exclusive Kona-Kohala coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, this 32-acre resort is dotted with picturesque guest bungalows, white-sand beaches, and a championship golf course. The property also boasts seven swimming pools, including King’s Pond, a 1.8-million-gallon natural one carved out of lava, which is home to more than 3,000 tropical fish. Subterranean channels fill the pond with ocean water that ebbs and flows with the tide, and snorkeling equipment is provided to guests.
10. The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong, China
Definitely not for those who suffer from vertigo, this rooftop infinity pool is perched on the top floor of the 118-story International Commerce Center. Part of the two-year-old hotel’s spa complex, the indoor pool is noted for its sweeping views of Victoria Harbor and the Hong Kong skyline. Adding to the drama are 144 LED screens installed into the ceiling, reflecting colorful images onto the water below. The award-winning spa also houses cold and hot plunge pools, and – for those who truly aren’t afraid of heights – an outdoor Jacuzzi.
