Hotel Interior Design has news for you. Design company Salt & Water design studio has come up with the concept of the “boatel”. The design features a reception area, restaurant and café in the middle and is surrounded by catamaran pods, offering guests uninterrupted views of the nature around them.

The individual boat pods mean people can sail during the day and re-group at night for an evening meal or drinks. Each catamaran pod includes a reception area, a galley, a bathroom, a hall with storage space and a spacious sleeping area that can accommodate four people. They also have two outdoor areas – the flying bridge and the beach platform for swimming, diving, fishing and sun bathing.

Salt & Water says the design will allow more travellers to experience rivers and lakes in an eco-friendly way, with minimal disruption to the natural surroundings. Its plans recently won them the Millennium Yacht Design Award, an international competition for yacht designers.

Benjamin Maltby, principal consultant at MatrixLloyd, said: “The inside/outside room became a staple of super yacht design in the mid-2000s, and these spaces normally work wonderfully. I’d want the whole hotel moored somewhere where the water underneath is moving: stagnant water encourages mosquitoes. I’d also want each apartment to be able to swing round so that it faced into the oncoming wind and wasn’t buffeted by crosswinds all night. In summary, this is a stunning idea, but whether or not it will work will depend on where the hotel is located.” A location for the boatel has yet to be decided.

New Majestic Hotel

A revamped historic hotel on a Chinatown street in Singapore once notorious for housing wealthy men’s mistresses, the New Majestic, with its shop house façade, blends perfectly with the neighborhood. But inside, the juxtaposition of antique and modern, interior and exterior, provides a theatrical environment where guests can indulge their imaginations. The 30 guestrooms are individually crafted visions by a diverse group of creatives enlisted by Colin Seah of Ministry of Design. His core crew came up with four room ‘typologies,’ including the Hanging Bed Rooms where larger-than-life murals span whole walls, and the sensuous Loft Room where vintage twin tubs look up on an attic-area sleeping space that appears to float. In the hotel’s restaurant, ceiling portholes open onto the floor of the outdoor pool, as swimmers cast shadows onto the tables below, while the sensuously curved white staircase seems to invite a line of chorus girls. Majestic, indeed.

Wanderlust

Combining a sense of artistic whimsy with cutting-edge design, the Wanderlust in Singapore’s Little India was created with adventurous travelers in mind. Hotel owner Loh Lik Peng, a local hero after the success of his New Majestic Hotel, gave four design firms one floor each to create their own interpretation of contemporary style and comfort. Designed by Asylum, the lobby has a glam industrial vibe. Upstairs, the 29 guestrooms run the gamut from vivid candy colors (Phunk Studio) and arty black-and-white minimalism (DP Architects) to one-of-a-kind duplex apartments (fFurious). Set in a historic 1920s building, the beautiful Art-Nouveau mosaic on the Wanderlust’s facade hints at the cheeky patchwork of 21^st-century design it now houses. The hotel’s casual French restaurant Cocotte, meanwhile, has proved to be an instant hit with the locals. With eye-popping design and friendly service, Wanderlust delivers on Peng’s desire that his hotels be like ‘playgrounds for grown-ups.
