Palacio de Sal in Bolivia used the famous salt of the Salar de Uyuni to create itself as a luxury hotel in the middle of the Bolivian Desert. Everything in the hotel is made of salt, which includes the building and the furniture. The Palacio de Sal has thirty rooms with wooden flooring and a private tiled bath. Bed platforms and armchairs in the common area are made of salt, but plush blankets and pillows make for a comfortable stay. The dining room’s windows frame a panoramic view of the salt flats, and meals include locally sourced llama and lamb and the house speciality, salt chicken.

The Icehotel was founded in 1989 and is the world’s first hotel made of ice and snow. The hotel has 150 warm and cold rooms with the cold rooms having ice decor and a bad made of ice covered with reindeer hides and guests sleep in a thermal sleeping bag. The Icehotel also includes an ice church, ice bar, ice sculpting studio and pillar hall, in addition to two heated restaurants, lounge, four meeting rooms and two wilderness camps.
