Hotel de Vendome – Place Vendome

Many people know about the legendary Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, that glamorous, just-revamped celebrity haunt on the Côte d’Azur, but its little sister, the 29-room Hôtel de Vendôme, situated in the very centre of Paris, is a better-kept secret. In a brilliant location only a short distance from the Tuileries garden, the hotel’s discreet exterior gives little away. Built in 1723 as a private mansion, the hotel still exudes old-school opulence, with oak panelling, elaborate crystal chandeliers, billowing ruched curtains and elegant antiques. Service is equally old-school and the friendly staff go out of their way to be accommodating. The one thing the hotel lacked was a great restaurant, and this has now been addressed. The brilliant new 1 Place Vendôme is tucked away on the first floor and has an exquisite, Dior-inspired black, white and dusky-pink interior by Michele Bonan (one of the most well known hotel interior designers, designer behind JK Place Florence & Capri, Ferragamo’s Lungarno Hotels) and unique, fresh, seasonal French food by the award-winning executive chef from the Michelin-starred Restaurant Le Cap.

The largest of these four hotels, but so intimate that you’d never know it, the 54-room Hôtel Pavilion de la Reine, which dates from the 19th century, is situated on Place des Vosges, the prettiest square in the Marais, if not Paris. Privately owned, family-run and accessed via a leafy private courtyard, the hidden-gem stakes are high, so much so that Jean Paul Gaultier quietly checked in for a year while his place was being redecorated. The hotel has recently undergone a major refurbishment, and the result is both cosy and glamorous with a sleek contemporary look that incorporates plum-coloured walls, tactile velvet throws and historic portraits. The foyer feels like a private library and leads into a series of intimate seating areas. It’s the sort of place where people grab a drink from the honesty bar and flop in front of the fire. Other new features include the two-treatment-room Spa de la Reine by Carita, which has a Jacuzzi, hammam and gymnasium, and a series of interconnecting rooms ideal for families.

Hotel Daniel – Rue Frederic Bastiat

While the term ‘urban retreat’ is much too liberally used, the 26-room Hotel Daniel in Paris really feels like one. Tucked away between the Champs-Elysées and rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, this Relais & Châteaux hotel combines the intimacy of a private townhouse – one feels immediately at home in the reception rooms, which double as tea salons – with the sophistication of an international hotel. The interior designer Tarfa Salam has fused East and West, deliciously atmospheric 19th-century France with the very latest modern technology, decorating interiors with exquisite Asian antiques, bespoke contemporary furniture and vibrant hand-painted chinoiserie-inspired wallpaper. In classic Haussmann style, rooms on the second and the sixth floor have balconies. The hotel also has a gourmet traditional French restaurant whose menu is injected with subtle oriental influences, in keeping with the rest of the hotel (for example, honey-roasted lamb and chickpeas in Sichuan jus; Roquefort soufflé with pear and lemon thyme), and a lounge and bar offering a very good all-day breakfast.

Hotel Design de la Sorbonne – Rue Victor Cousin

One of five chic Left Bank hotels within the forward-thinking Hôtels Paris Rive Gauche group, the 38-room Hôtel de la Sorbonne is right across the street from the university and close to the boutiques of St Germain. After a major refurbishment by the owners, Pascale and Corinne Moncelli, the hotel has emerged bold and vibrant with individually decorated bedrooms, Regency-style chairs upholstered in refreshingly bright peacock blues, lime greens and silver, carpets with excerpts from classic French literature woven in and graphic botanical-print wallpaper. Every bedroom is different – some have claw-foot baths, others lavish four-posters. Each comes with its own iMac computer, which provides free access to the internet and a means to play DVDs. The hotel group has long supported contemporary artists and photographers, and the revamped Design de la Sorbonne provides the perfect gallery space for a whole new set of creatives. Themes of the work currently on display include ‘explorers and great travellers’, ‘Sorbonne University’ and ‘the passing of time’.

Chua K’a unblocks and revitalizes energy in 27 areas of the body, combining reiki, Thai massage stretching and reflexology into one. It reduces pain, restores mobility and stimulates circulation and lymphatic drainage—all of which is particularly beneficial to those who glacier trek, ice climb and hike difficult routes in the Torres del Paine National Park, where the resort is located.

One of the signature treatments at the spa at Viceroy Snowmass is the Sami Zen Ritual. Created by Kerstin Florian, the Swedish founder of her eponymous skincare line used in spas around the globe, the ritual was inspired by the Sami people, who are indigenous to Scandinavia. Perfect for cross-country and alpine skiers, the treatment, meant to open energy pathways throughout the body, is set to two hours of traditional Nordicjoik music. A detoxifying exfoliation is followed by an herbal aromatherapy bath before the body is massaged to the music using sacred Arctic birch oil and botestenar—healing rose porphyry stones that reflect energy, purpose, clearing and release.

The 10 most haunted hotels in UK

Dear Hotel Lovers,

Today we’re going to travel to the enchanted United Kingdom and see some of the most haunted hotels you can check in and be amazed. They will make you shiver in fright! Or just arouse your curiosity to try a different kind of hotel experience! Most of those most haunted hotels are castel hotels and can make us travel in time. Get to know these creepy hotel stories and find this kind of luxury travel available at the following spots:

1. Jamaica Inn, Bodmin Moor, Cornwall

"The 10 most haunted hotels in UK - Jamaica Inn" The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK Jamaica Inn

Yes, it’s that Jamaica Inn, of Daphne Du Maurier fame. Unsurprisingly, the 250-year-old tavern hosts an extensive collection of smuggling paraphernalia. Less well known is its collection of other-worldly goings on: the inexplicable noises of cartwheels and horses’ hooves in the cobbled courtyard; footsteps in empty corridors; a gentleman in a tricorn hat who walks through walls; and a murder victim who calmly sits outside musing on something. For a guaranteed sleepless night, ask for bedroom four.

2. Chillingham Castle, Alnwick, Northumberland, England

"The10 most haunted hotels in UK - Chillingham Castle" The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK Chillingham Castle

Chillingham is famous for its moaning and whimpering Blue Boy. His bones and some scraps of blue clothing were discovered behind a wall where his cries have been heard, suggesting he may have been immured there. In the meantime, the rustle of a dress on the turret stairs heralds the passage of the restless spirit of Lady Mary Berkeley as she searches in vain for her husband (he ran off with her sister). Then of course there’s the white lady in the pantry, the voices in the chapel etc.

3. Talbot Hotel, Oundle, Northamptonshire, England

"The 10 most haunted hotels in UK - Talbot Hotel" The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK Talbot Hotel

If celebrity ghost hunting is your game, head for the Talbot Hotel which, ironically for a fine Elizabethan house, is said to be haunted by Mary Queen of Scots. The hotel’s staircase used to adorn Fotheringhay Castle and Mary passed down it on her final walk to the executioner’s block. As you might expect in a 16th-century building, there are oak beams and transom windows abounding, and open fires to warm your chilled spine when you witness the doomed conspirator reliving her final steps.

4. Elvey Farm, Pluckley, Kent, England

"The 10 most haunted hotels in UK - Elvey Farm" The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK Elvey Farm

Pluckley may look familiar as the setting for The Darling Buds of May but, according to the Guinness Book of Records, it’s also England’s most haunted village. Mediaeval Elvey Farm is slap bang in the middle of it and boasts beautiful bedrooms with ancient rafters and, if you’re lucky, a “weeping wanderer”. In the vicinity you might also encounter the unhappy wraiths of a schoolmaster, a soldier, a highwayman, a screaming man, a miller, Red Lady Derring, a white dog and many others besides, so don’t forget to pack a camera.

5. The Prince Rupert Hotel, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England

"The 10 most haunted hotels in UK - The Prince Rupert Hotel" The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The Prince Rupert Hotel1

In need of an exceptionally grisly night? Try room six, where it is claimed the spectre of a hanging woman can often be seen. If that’s a little too much, you might prefer one of the other rooms in which visitors have merely reported the unexplained movement of objects. As the name suggests, the hotel used to be the home of Prince Rupert though guests can choose to plunge even further back in time in suites decked out in the manner of gracious 12th or 15th-century living.

6. Ruthin Castle, Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales

"The 10 most haunted hotels in UK - Ruthin Castle, Ruthin, Denbighshire, Wales" The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK Ruthin Castle Ruthin Denbighshire Wales

Any castle that sports a Drowning Pit, a Whipping Pit and dungeons is asking to be haunted, frankly. Add the execution of a jealous wife who had murdered her husband’s lover with an axe and the chances of the place not teeming with ghostly goings on is practically nil. At Ruthin – a brilliant red fort with over 400 years of grim history behind it – the Grey Lady can be seen roaming the battlements and chapel (sans axe, regrettably) whilst other areas of the castle are prone to mysterious noises, footsteps, inexplicable changes in temperature and the appearance of a spectral soldier.

7. Maes-y-Neuadd Talsarnau, Gwynedd, Wales

"The 10 most haunted hotels in UK - Maes-y-Neuadd Talsarnau, Gwynedd, Wales" The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK Maes y Neuadd Talsarnau Gwynedd Wales

Not all apparitions aim to frighten, of course – this 14th-century granite manor house is home to a ghost who is really quite friendly. Maes-y-Neuadd’s Morfa Suite is the scene of many sightings of a woman thought to have been a children’s nursemaid. Rather than being terrified, guests claim they became very calm in her presence and found themselves drifting pleasantly off to sleep. If you don’t receive a visitation, you can at least console yourself the next morning with the hotel’s eye-easing views of Snowdonia.

8. Tulloch Castle Hotel, Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland

Not one for the faint hearted, this – one guest reported waking up to feel two ghostly girls sitting on his chest in an apparent attempt to suffocate him. Others have seen figures at the foot of their bed and experienced nights disturbed by rattling door handles and other noises. There’s also a Green Lady who mopes about, having died falling down a spiral staircase. If this were not enough, the former castle, dating from the 12th century, also contains secret passages, a secret door and a secret tunnel to Dingwall Castle. Hard core paranormalists should ask for room eight.

9. Comlongon Castle, Clarencefield, Dumfries, Scotland

"The 10 most haunted hotels in UK - Comlongon Castle, Clarencefield, Dumfries, Scotland" The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK Comlongon Castle Clarencefield Dumfries Scotland

It was reported on September 25 1570 that the Lady Marion Carruthers “did willfully take her own life by leaping from the lookout tower of Comlongon Castle and did break her head and bones”. It’s no surprise to learn that grass refused to grow on the spot where the cruelly imprisoned wife struck the ground or that her sorrowful spirit still stalks this luxurious mediaeval castle on the Scottish borders. The fact that her ghost is green, smells of apples and moves jewellery around rooms is perhaps a little bit special. Marion hunters should request the Carruthers suite, her centre of operations.

10. Dobbins Inn, Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland

"The 10 most haunted hotels in UK - Dobbins Inn Hotel" The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK The 10 most haunted hotels in UK DobbinsHotel

Built in the 13th century and one of Northern Ireland’s oldest pubs, the Dobbins has served as a gaol, an armoury, a post office and a safe haven for Catholics (the priest hole can still be seen in the reception area). However, none of this will be any consolation to Maude and Buttoncap. The former, the wife of Hugh Dobbins, fell for the latter, a soldier garrisoned in the castle across the road, and they would meet up via a secret tunnel. When Dobbins discovered them, he killed them both with a sword, though it’s only Maude who comes back to caress sleeping guests with her hand.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London – Tower of London, England

Given that Mint Hotel Tower of London debuted last winter, this summer marked the first time the Skylounge was finally able to show off its outdoor terrace.

Cozy up in a blood-orange, cream, or copper leather chair and order traditional British pub fare — try Ploughman’s, a platter with ham, scotch egg, Duddleswell cheddar, onion chutney, hedgerow berry compote, and pickled onions — or a contemporary dessert (roasted coconut and meringue balls, anyone?)Missed your chance to travel to London in the summer? Skylounge is open year-round, thanks to an indoor bar area. You may be distracted by the views of London’s skyline, including the iconic Tower Bridge.

Highbar at Dream South Beach, Miami, Florida

Fresh off its July opening, Highbar — Dream South Beach’s brand-new rooftop bar — features 1970s-inspired décor, but with modern amenities (like a custom infinity-edge pool that glows with blue and purple lights at night) and food from the downstairs restaurant (Tudor House by celeb chef Geoffrey Zakarian).

Described as a contemporary take on the famed discotheque Studio 54 in New York City, the Lucite and glass tiles help promote a vintage vibe but the all-white structures (and two bed-size cabanas with flat-screen TVs) remind you that this is South Beach. In addition to drinks, food can be brought to you from Tudor House, ranging from upscale poolside snacks (poached tuna in a jar) to meatier options like organic buttermilk fried chicken or a Cuban-style pressed sandwich.

Level 3 at Four Seasons Hotel Denver, Colorado

The Mile High City’s latest high-altitude attraction — a third-story rooftop terrace with a pool — was revealed just before Memorial Day weekend. Outfitted with lounge chairs and beds with sun shields, Level 3 is typically reserved for hotel guests, except for Thursday nights when it’s a scene with 300 to 500 people.

A special menu from EDGE, the hotel’s steakhouse, includes lighter items such as spiked frozen “push-pops,” ceviche, grilled fish tacos, and key-lime tarts. During the day, complimentary flavored tea lollipops and smoothie shots are available poolside.

Because this rooftop bar is weather-dependent, the fun is not expected to last beyond Sept. 15 — so you better get to Denver soon.

Three Sixty Rooftop Bar at Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, Missouri

Could this be the new premiere seating area to watch St. Louis Cardinals’ home games? (Busch Stadium is across the street.)

This 275-seat rooftop bar (with a wine wall and flat-screen TVs) is predicted to be the new hot spot in St. Louis — and not just in summer. When it’s too cold to even hang out next to Three Sixty’s fire pits, portions of the 6,000-square-foot space remain open as indoor bar areas are protected from the harsh winter.

Snacks are better than typical sports-bar fare: think truffle popcorn, roasted BBQ oysters, and local artisanal cheeses.

Ibiza at Hotel Andaluz, Albuquerque, New Mexico

While this 107-room hotel opened near Albuquerque’s Old Town in 2009, the rooftop bar didn’t reveal itself until April 2010. Named after the nightlife-centric island in Spain, Ibiza boasts a view of Albuquerque’s skyline — and the Sandia Mountains.

On weekdays, appetizers served at Ibiza during happy hour include flatbreads topped with Mediterranean-inspired ingredients; paella with black mussels, chorizo, pork loin, clams, rock shrimp and bay scallops; and a Croque Star sandwich with Spanish sweet-potato fries.

Le 360 at Radisson Blu 1835 Hotel & Thalasso, Cannes, France

Cannes gets a new sort of glitz with Le 360 at Radisson Blu, wedged between the city’s yacht harbor and a beach. An express elevator takes guests (including those not staying at the hotel) right up to the seventh floor where a rooftop terrace awaits.

Although this rooftop bar has been open since January when the hotel was rebranded, it wasn’t until this summer that a panoramic view of the bay of Cannes looked this good. After a day of touring local vineyards or chilling on the beach, Le 360 is the perfect place for a nightcap.

Blue Sky at Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok, Thailand

This 565-room hotel houses many cool spots — eight restaurants and two bars to be precise. But the hippest place for a drink is Blue Sky, its rooftop lounge on the 24th floor that debuted in December 2010. In addition to specialty cocktails, wine, beer, and a full bar, you can order tapas that range from grain-fed beef to desserts like Black Forest cake.

Decorated with cherry-red oval tables and art installations with a bluish glow, this outdoor bar is the best-kept secret in Bangkok — for the moment. Fortunately, during rain or cooler temperatures, the inside portion of Blue Sky remains open.

Even as Lantern’s second summer draws to a close, the city’s pulse continues to throb up on the hotel roof  top – The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore, in the Marina Bay waterfront area. Sample tapas (like mini Wagyu beef burgers), and enjoy live Latin music and DJ-spun tunes.

Orchestrated by a well-known designer in Asia (Andre Fu), Lantern has a swimming pool, a mixologist at the ready, vintage-inspired furnishings, and tropical-inspired landscaping. But it’s the 360-degree view of the city that sets this bar apart from the rest.

L.A.’s nightlife scene keeps getting hotter, extending even all the way out to the Pike Long Beach. The rooftop bar — complete with a swimming pool and views of the Queen Mary — is fast becoming the It spot to hang out in Long Beach

In town to catch a cruise? On weekdays, it’s all about the afternoon cabana rentals. On weekends, the space transforms into a lounge with cocktails, food, and music. In addition to martinis and mojitos, the menu evokes California cool with favorites like a halibut fish taco or frozen chocolate-milk drinks. Rooftop Lounge at Thompson Toronto, Canada

Since opening in June 2010, the lounge has had two personalities: a poolside club during the day (complete with cabanas and an infinity-edge pool) and a nightclub vibe after dark. No matter what time of day or night you swing by, enjoy panoramic views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline.

Even when autumn arrives, this lounge is worth a visit: An indoor bar area is decked out with lots of windows and sleek décor (think black-and-white-striped couches and a black granite bar). Above all, exclusivity is flaunted here; you must be a hotel guest or member to enter.
