The Beatles: The Hotels Where They’ve Stayed

On the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ official arrival in America, we’re retracing their steps—from New York to Miami—one screaming crowd and hotel room at a time. Talking about luxury travel and hotel experience, we like to connect hotels to iconic celebrities (see Where do celebrities sleep?) Of course, The Beatles are one good example of it.

While 4,000 fans waved the band goodbye at London’s Heathrow Airport, the screaming throng of 3,000 young girls who met their plane as it touched down at New York City’s JFK Airport wasn’t too shabby either. Photographer Harry Benson was there to capture the action, and later assembled his portraits into a limited-edition book for TASCHEN.

Next stop for John, Paul, George, and Ringo? The Plaza Hotel, which would become their home base while prepping for their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, on February 9, 1964The broadcast would attract a record number of viewers—73 million in total. Crowds gathered outside the hotel to welcome the Fab Four.

The unprecedented viewership left The Ed Sullivan Show producers only one choice: to do it again! The very next week, and on location. So Sullivan and his crew headed for Miami Beach, where The Beatles performed one again a week later, on February 16th, at the Deauville Beach Resort.

When they weren’t rehearsing, the band members could be found taking advantage of the hotel’s beachfront location, and cozying up to the locals. In honor of the show’s 50th anniversary, the hotel is hosting a two-day concert, 1964: The Tribute.

"The Beatles pillow fight - Hotel George V" The Beatles: The Hotels Where They've Stayed The Beatles: The Hotels Where They've Stayed The Beatles The Hotels Where Theyve Stayed Hotel George V

Harry Benson had been with The Beatles in the days before their trip to America as well. In fact, it was in Paris—at the Hotel George V—that they learned (at 3 a.m.) they’d be headed to New York in a few days to perform, after “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” hit number one on the U.S. charts. They celebrated with a pillow fight.

It was also at the Hotel George V that the band composed the music and lyrics for “I Feel Fine.”

On September 10, 1964, The Beatles were back in Florida for a concert in Jacksonville. But Hurricane Isabel diverted their flight, and they ended up at the decidedly laidback Key Wester Motel in Key West, drinking and jamming with their opening acts. Though the hotel was eventually demolished to make way for the Hyatt Windward Pointe, its stop on The Beatles’ tour of America is still remembered. The hotel’s open-air recreational area is called Beatles Hut, where guests chow down on food from the Abbey Road Snack Shack.

The Beatles would continue to make their presence known at hotels around the world. On March 25, 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged a Bed-In — an anti-Vietnam protest that saw them inviting media to come and watch them lie in bed for a week — at the Hilton Amsterdam.

Luxury hotels: THE TOREN HOTEL’s experience

Wherever life will take you, there will always be a place to Amsterdam.

New York Design Agenda went to Amsterdam and brought us this great testimony about this luxury travel experience.

The charming Dutch city is all about romantic scenarios, beautifull water canals, friendly people and, of course, utterly charming hotels. Amsterdam leaves no space for romance, it’s pure hot love. An affair with luxury in the country of flowers.

Somewhere right next to the city center is the gorgeous The Toren Hotel. The amazing place we stood for two days. “Designed to Charm”, is probably the most accurated slogan for this fabulous boutique hotel. Whoever wants to be treated to a unique and memorable stay in Amsterdam should stay at The Toren Hotel.

The Toren Hotel - Amsterdam Luxury hotels: THE TOREN HOTEL's experience Luxury hotels: THE TOREN HOTEL's experience Luxury hotels THE TOREN HOTELs experience1

The hotel is elegantly designed for an stunning experience of burlesque and dramatic interiors and very warm welcome, combined with the beautiful surroundings of Amsterdam’s central canal area create a special atmosphere for relaxation.

The Toren is placed amongst the grand 17th century canal houses of the Keizergracht. The well known interior designer Wim van de Oudeweetering took charge of creating a chic, theatrical and slightly mystical ambience, in which style, warmth and comfort unite. The 38 guest rooms are all different and vary from small and elegant to spacious and stunningly beautiful.

Accordingly to Priscilla Visser, the super charming and friendly, Guest Relations, The Toren Hotel goal is to create a “lush, romantic design with a very warm, welcoming and comfortable environment”.

Let’s check some of their unique and voluptous areas:

Reception

The Toren Hotel's reception Luxury hotels: THE TOREN HOTEL's experience Luxury hotels: THE TOREN HOTEL's experience Luxury hotels THE TOREN HOTELs experience2

The moment you enter the reception you’ll see two great things: the most amazing and friendly staff; and, as well, a combination of textures and colors that immediately will blow your mind.

A strong character from strong colors, luxurious textures and powerfull details. Let’s go deeper on that with the rooms.

Executive Suite Room

The Toren Hotel - Executive Suite Room Luxury hotels: THE TOREN HOTEL's experience Luxury hotels: THE TOREN HOTEL's experience Luxury hotels THE TOREN HOTELs experience3

The rooms are like poetry: classy beds and over-detailed consoles whom transport you to the XVII century with a lot of Victorian motives. The bathrooms are modern and super chic, proudly exhibiting an amazing combination of minimalistic showers and a glorious jacuzzi.

The Bar Lounge

Toren’s bar is a trip in time. Makes you want to have a gin in the most pure classic and exotic ambiance. Absolutely love every details.

This hotel has nothing to do with regular luxury hotel services. It’s totally unique in its own way of taking care of their guests. A 5-stars experience.

Let me share a little more of it’s history and location meaning.

Both canal houses are such unique buildings both from the 17th century and very delicate. Modern and luxurious touches are added whilst style respect the heritage of the building at all times.

One lovely detail includes the ceiling in the bar which has been painted by the students of Rembrandt. The most remarkable figure to have lived in the house was Abraham Kuiper, who lived from 1837 to 1920. He was the founder of the Dutch Antirevolutionary Party (ARP) and became Prime Minister for the Netherlands in 1901, after which he moved to The Hague. That is just one small part of the history of the canal property that is no known as the Toren Hotel.

I guess enough has been said. Mark my words: The Toren Hotel is the best place to stay to visit the lovely and biggest city of Netherlands: Amsterdam.
